Russ Martin Gives $30,000 to Fallen Officer's Wife

Russ Martin - DPD.jpgSay what you will about Russ Martin - and, believe me, I've said a lot - the guy deserves credit for keeping his Listeners Foundation up and running even though his gig at Live 105.3 got axed.

In keeping with a promise he made upon establishing the foundation after 9/11, Martin today will hand deliver a $30,000 check to Regina Smith, widow of fallen police officer Norm Smith. The fund was fed by Martin's band, co-workers and listeners of The Russ Martin Show, taken off the air when the station switched to 105.3 The Fan back on Dec. 8.

"It stays intact," Martin said of the foundation last night in an "exclusive" interview with Channel 8 that was otherwise useless yet somehow garnered big ratings. "Not gonna stop whether we're on the air or not."

Martin is arrogant, abrasive and he may or may not be guilty of beating the crap out of girlfriend. He also, at least temporarily, has his heart in the right place. - Richie Whitt

Rev. Jack says:

Good for Mr. Matin.

I honestly hope he isn't guilty on the domestic abuse charge. If guilty, I hope he pays the penalty.

Either way, his on-air potty-mouthed show has funded a number of good projects in this town.

I wasn't a fan, but I hope that even Russ Martin gets a chance at redemption. We all need it.

Lance says:

It's a massive PR stunt to show he has heart! No, not really. When I heard the news about Officer Smith I wondered if Russ would still give out money to the family. Good on him.

Now find him and BDH a home on Dallas airwaves!

I'm glad to see Russ continue to give to families in their time of need.

I say he'll be back on the air in 6 months or less.

duh! says:

Of course the Listeners Foundation is up and running. Mr. Martin can't go in just willy-nilly and say "I'm not on the air anymore so there is no more foundation" and "Hey, here's a lot of money. I wonder what to do with it?".

There are laws that cover how foundations start, are run and are finally shut down. The "guy" doesn't deserve any credit. He's following the law! You really think Russ Martin keeps track of each and every donation, fills out Forms A-Z in triplicate for the government and the IRS, and then audits each dollar as it's spent?? Of course not!!!

So, yeah, it stays intact unless the money runs dry or Mr. Martin, who likely is Chairman of the foundation, and it's governing board decides to ask the attorneys to start disbanding it.

Mr. Whitt, your comments lauding Mr. Martin are just as misguided as Mr. Bark's in giving him credit for WFAA's ratings. Did either of you gentlemen ever stop to think that the interview with Patrick Swayze might have brought the viewers in along with interest in the DPD shooting?
