We’re No. 2! We’re No. 2!

Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was.

Came across a quote from Texas Rangers’ bench Art Howe this morning that summed up the perverted perspective of our local baseball team:

“ … if we finish second, we’ve had a heck of a year, no matter what our record is because we went from last to second in our division.”

Really? A heck of a year? Good. Grief.

Yes, the Rangers have provided some goose-bumpy memories this season and, at 70-74 with 18 games remaining, they still have a chance to finish above .500 for only the second time this millenium.

But a heck of a year?

Attendance will be the lowest in Arlington since 1988 and don’t you get the feeling – stop me if you’ve heard this one before – that the Rangers’ preposterous pitching has wasted an almost magical season from hitters like Josh Hamilton, Ian Kinsler and Milton Bradley?

Last year, with his team eight games under .500, manager Ron Washington graded himself an "A". Now, with Texas a whopping 17 games behind division-leading Anaheim, his bench coach calls this "a heck of a year".

Translation: The Rangers’ bar is perpetually, ridiculously, embarrassingly low.

Sad. Just sad. -- Richie Whitt
