Week 2 NFL Quarterback Rankings

From undrafted free agent to the cover of SI to the top of my rankings. Not bad, kid. Not bad at all.

My first installment was such an, um, hit, that I decided, what the heck, let’s make this is a weekly staple.

Everyone loves quarterbacks. Sports geeks love rankings. I love criticism. It’s the perfect marriage.

Lots of changes this week as, in case you missed it, a fella named Tom Brady suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of the first game. Let’s see just how genius Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick is with Matt Cassel running the show.

Tennessee’s Vince Young, after being booed off the field, that is, might be out 2-4 weeks with a sprained knee and Tampa Bay’s Jeff Garcia and Kansas City’s Brodie Croyle are also iffy with injuries.

With Peyton Manning looking uncharacteristically rusty coming off his preseason knee surgery, I see no reason not to push the Cowboys’ Tony Romo to the head of the class in light of his 320-yard debut in Cleveland. And, just to make it juicy – Dallas hosts the Eagles Monday night -- let’s move Philly’s Donovan McNabb and his 361-yard performance just into Tony's blind spot.

No doubt you’ll find other reasons to disagree with me – perhaps 32 of them – after the jump.

1. Tony Romo – Cowboys

2. Peyton Manning – Colts

3. Donovan McNabb -- Eagles

4. Drew Brees – Saints

5. Ben Roethlisberger – Steelers

6. Eli Manning – Giants

7. Philip Rivers -- Chargers

8. Jay Cutler – Broncos

9. Jake Delhomme – Panthers

10. Brett Favre – Jets

11. Aaron Rodgers – Packers

12. Carson Palmer – Bengals

13. Derek Anderson – Browns

14. Matt Hasselbeck – Seahawks

15. David Garrard – Jaguars

16. Matt Ryan – Falcons

17. Jon Kitna – Lions

18. Kurt Warner – Cardinals

19. JaMarcus Russell – Raiders

20. Chad Pennington – Dolphins

21. Trent Edwards – Bills

22. Marc Bulger – Rams

23. Jason Campbell – Redskins

24. Matt Schaub – Texans

25. Kyle Orton – Bears

26. Tarvaris Jackson -- Vikings

27. Matt Cassel – Patriots

28. Kerry Collins – Titans

29. Brian Griese – Buccaneers

30. Damon Huard -- Chiefs

31. Joe Flacco – Ravens

32. JT O’Sullivan – 49ers -- Richie Whitt

BeefSupreme says:

I don't know how Jerry pulled off keeping Romo AND landing Peyton, but I'd say that's a pretty impressive QB tandem!

Seriously though, JaMarcus Russell, even at 19, is listed way too high. Maybe flip he and Orton?

He Kexin says:

I know Cowboy homers would beat you to no end but please Romo over McNabb. Romo has 3 pro bowl offensive weapons and McNabb has Westbrook. I wonder what the fans would do if Romo gets one playoff win this year? Hell, Danny White went to three NFC Championship games with the Cowboys and he's barely remembered in this town.

Tom says:

Gotta give Huard props for making the list, even at No. 30, considering that Brodie Croyle is the Chiefs' starting QB.

Richie Whitt says:

C'mon, y'all didn't hear about the big Cowboys-Colts trade? No. Well maybe you heard about the big typo?

Richie Whitt says:

Croyle, as I noted last week, was the Chiefs' starter. I said was.

The second installment seems to be going well so far!

What does Joe Flacco have to do to get any love from you, Richie (besides not suck)?

Fraggy says:

who the heck is joe flacco? sounds like a simpsons or family guy character.

anyway...mcnabb over romo? maybe 5 years ago, but not today. if mcnabb continues to play as he did last sunday, he MIGHT get to romo's level. maybe i missed it, but i don't recall seeing mcnabb at the pro bowl the last two years.

Rhinosaur
He could maybe change his last name. His name screams of having a gas problems. Can you imgagine if Joe Montana's last name would have been Flacco?

Steeler Man says:

How long before Carson Palmer is 32? I say one more week........as in one more weak performance. I've always been sick of hearing how great he is. Maybe someday the experts will realize he's no Roethlisberger!
