The Dallas comedy scene has grown up so much so fast that among our evolving flock of chuckle monkeys, we now have "young comedians," which in show business terms is somewhere in between the "neurula" and "tadpole" stages of comedy stardom.

Stand Up! Records seems to have taken notice of our burgeoning comedy community as well. They just released a special collection of Texas comedians appropriately dubbed The Texas Mess on iTunes.

The album features sets from 13 comedians from across the state, four of whom earned their chops in DFW's growing comedy community including Dominic Harris, Chelsea Hood, Carey Denise and the Dallas Observer's 2012 pick for Best Comedian Clint Werth. The sets were recorded and performed last year at Stand Up! Records' Texas Mess comedy show at the New Movement Theater as part of last year's Underground Comedy Festival.

Texas has become one of Stand Up! Records President Dan Schlissel's regular stops on tours to find new talent for his label and Dallas is usually on his schedule. Stand Up! Records gave comedian Paul Varghese his first, full length live comedy album Paul & Oates in 2013.

He credits the success of the city's comedy community to setting up places where comedians can play and cultivate their material.

"There's talent anywhere if you know where to dig but the question is what are they able to do and how do they expand on it," Schlissel says. "Having things like 24/7 Comedy [Radio] and two Hyena's Comedy Clubs and an Improv as well as the Dallas Comedy House and other coffee houses and places like that, they give comics fertile ground to work on their stuff. I believe in the smaller scenes, you have a set of peers that you want to make laugh and it becomes this broader things to help make those other folks laugh. I think Dallas is a great incubator for that.

"Something I've really grown to appreciate is the raw talent of Texas comics," Schlissel adds, "and this album is that."
