13 Awesome Things To Do In Dallas This Weekend: August 23 to 26

Holler at your Fly Girlz, there's a nineties party on Saturday!

Hold on to your fannypacks, kids. It's going to be one helluva weekend. You'll need to clone yourself by Saturday to hit up Art Conspiracy's RZN8, a pro wrestling match (and wine mixer) in a sports bar, a '90s theme party, AND a pop-up fashion show with local T-shirt designers and nail art. There's lots to nibble on until then: Comedy, shopping, tripped-out cinema and gallery openings have all volunteered to help you shake those workweek blues. Make a plan. Share this list with your gang. And click the event titles for more details. I'll see you out there. (I'll be the one in living color.)

Thursday 8.23
Intermix Fall Preview -- In addition to getting first dibs on all of those lovely frocks over at Intermix, this shopping event doubles as a fundraiser for Paws in the City. So go ahead, have another bevie and squeeze yourself into that tiny dress; you're doing it ... for the animals.

Chelsea Hood & Friends at Dallas Comedy House -- If you're like me, you want to know more about the local comedy scene but can't figure out which day to see a show. Awkward stand-up is uncomfortable; you need a comedy whisperer to guide you to the good stuff. Chelsea Hood has got your back. Our favorite sassy redhead curates the one-hour, 9:30 p.m. stand-up show each Thursday in August at Dallas Comedy House. Tonight you'll see Hood, Brian Breckenridge, Billy McFarland, Chris Darden, Dante Martinez and Erik Niewiaroski.

"The Narrative" at Kettle Art Gallery
-- The newest show at our favorite community gallery features work by Irving artist Richard Ross. He's exploring our search for ending, completion and all that makes up the journey. (Also, it's bright, punchy and fun to look at, so get over there.) The show starts at 7 p.m.

Friday 8.24
Dark Side of Oz at Texas Theatre -- Questions like "Do we start the Floyd at the second MGM lion roar, or the third?" are not your problem on Friday night. Texas Theatre is handling the tough stuff, so you can sit back and vegetate as shit gets trippy as fuck. Yep, your favorite Oak Cliff movie house is playing Dark Side of the Moon and Wizard of Oz (in 35 mm) at THE SAME TIME! Yo, scarecrow -- could you get me another brain? Mine just exploded.

Sebastian Maniscalco at Addison Improv -- Who doesn't love this guy? He's an Improv favorite, and that's because he finds humor in the peculiarities of modern living. Pop culture, technology and general human critique make up his schtick, which has been seen on everything from Conan to the Tonight Show. He's there from Thursday to Sunday, so check him out.

Dallas Black Film Festival -- For its 10th anniversary the DBFF has called in a little extra, guest speaker, talent: Professor Griff from Public Enemy. But even if Griff weren't attending, you'd still want to. This year's fest is poised around the theme Blaxsploitation and its organizers will be looking at the topic from all angles: past, present and future.

Tulisoma South Dallas Book Fair And Arts Festival
-- I bet you don't know much about our South Dallas authors. It's a fair assumption: Our city tends to stay on separate sides of the dance floor. Enough with that. There's a massive literature convention happening next door to you! Go check it out. There's even a Sunday gospel brunch.

Another fun one for Sunday night:  "Mischief All Night: an aerial lock-in"     Have you ever wondered how those high flyers do it? Well here's your chance to find out how! Moxie Mischief Aerial Arts will be hosting an aerial lock-in this Sunday, Sept. 2nd. at Dallas Rocks. From 8pm to 7am there will be aerial silks hung up, lyra hoops, cube and will even have a stage pole rigged up! There will be all different levels of classes going on, as well as, rock-climbing, different performances, snacks, fun and just hanging out. It would be an excellent way to get introduced to the aerial community, or just a fun way to join the circus for the night. $50 for members  & $65 for non-members. RSVP to moxiemischief@gmail.com to reserve your spot!
