Are you there, readers? It's me, Merritt.

Did you finish Chuck Palahniuk's Damned like a good Mixmaster Online Book Club member?

Good! That's exactly what we'd hoped for. Dilly dally no longer and get down there in the comments to discuss lying about causes of death, if you were feeling Palahniuk'd depiction of hell and whatever else you can think of from the fairly fast-reading creepery.

One of my least favorite CP books ever. Damned = Fake Manolo Blahniks. And it is part of a trilogy?  No thanks.

I'm not adverse to gross and disgusting images but that whole part where she was masturbating the giant with the guy's head was sick.  The rest of the book was too repetitive and meandering.  I did enjoy reading the many ways people ended up in hell and that would have made a great short story but it isn't enough to sustain novel length.

I agree - there were great ideas, but everything seemed so rushed and slapped on. The relationships matured too quickly - she went from not knowing the other "Breakfast Clubbers" to them being old friends without any real, satisfying moments that grew the relationships. And, I was hoping someone would mention the giant. Though the line about The Color Purple made me laugh.

Really, the only section I found redeeming was when Maddison realized that she didn't have to be passive or wait for life to happen to her because she was an outsider. So, I genuinely liked her as a warrior. But, there were - I agree - too many weak parts to make up for a satisfying whole.

So, did Goran do it on purpose? Does it matter?

Also, did you also read his name as Groan a few times before sort of associating it with Vincent D'Onofrio's character on L&O:CI?

I'm not cool enough for L&O. I don't know that it matters whether Goran did it or not, but if it was intention, I think it makes a really big statement (that I *think* Palahniuk points to throughout) that what we do on earth - no matter how atrocious - is just "earth stuff" and fairly mundane.

I haven't decided if it matters or not, either way. Is that weird? That I should be deciding that?
