The Master List: The Best Things to Do in Dallas This Weekend, November 11-13

Got a wall in your house that's desperate for a piece of art? This is the weekend to buy a painting, or at least stare at lots of art if you've already blown your budget on commemorative Nolan Ryan signed baseballs. If you haven't seen the latest exhibition at Kettle Art, this is the last weekend to do so. Splinters & Sparks features large-scale works from local artists George Fowler and Cabe Booth, and the show is packing up Saturday night. Fowler created large metal sculptures for the exhibition, while Booth crafted wood pieces adorned with oil, pencil and acrylic details. See their works from 7 to 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. Visit kettleart.com for more information.

We haven't watched the second season of Work of Art, but that's probably because the Bravo announcer dude proclaims in the commercial that you can't spell tears without and that's reason enough for us to skip it for another repeat of Top Chef. Sure, it would be cool to get a glimpse into the lives of artists and see them at work, but we don't need a reality show for that because the artists of the Continental Gin Building are letting visitors into their studios this weekend for a behind-the-scenes look at their work. Dozens of CGB artists, including Fannie Brito, VET and Bobby Chitwood, are opening their workspaces to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight and 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission and parking is free, plus you'll be treated to complimentary refreshments. Visit the event's Facebook page for details.

Dallas is home to plenty of conspiracy theorists, but luckily they aren't the organizers of Art Conspiracy because chances are that if they were involved in the fundraiser there'd be nothing but pamphlets on aliens and the Kennedy assassination. We already have plenty of those, but what we're really in need of is a nice piece of art to hang over the sofa.

Works from local artists will be auctioned off at Art Con 7, and bids start at $20 so there's no reason why you should come home empty-handed. Proceeds from this year's event benefit Musical Angels, a nonprofit organization that brings piano lessons to children in Medical City, Baylor Hospital and Scottish Rite. They'd like to expand their program to more hospitals, so be generous with your bids while you enjoy music from The Hope Trust, Datahowler and J. Charles and the Trainrobbers. Art Con is from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at 511 W. Commerce. Tickets are $10 and available on prekindle.com. Visit artconspiracy.org.

Lone Star International Film Festival
Friday, November 11, through Sunday, November 13, at Sundance Square

The Lone Star International Film Festival started on Wednesday, but if you've been too swamped at work to make it to Sundance Square you still have all weekend to see great films and panel discussions about them. Fans of the cult classic Carrie won't want to miss a special screening of the film at 9:15 p.m. tonight because Betty Buckley, who played gym teacher Miss Collins, and Piper Laurie, who was Carrie's crazy mother, will be in attendance. General admission to the screening at AMC Palace 9 is $7 (as well as for all other Lone Star films), but $20 premium tickets get you a copy of Laurie's new memoir, Learning to Live Out Loud. The festival continues through Sunday, so visit lonestarfilmsociety.com for the festival schedule and tickets.

26 Miles
Friday, November 11, and Saturday, November 12, at McKinney Avenue Contemporary

Kitchen Dog's new play, 26 Miles, opens tonight, and we expect Allie Donnelly, a student at Booker T. Washington, is pretty excited to be making her stage debut. Donnelly plays Olivia, a troubled teen whose distant father doesn't provide much comfort after she attempts suicide. That's where Beatriz, her estranged mother, comes in. Beatriz kidnaps Allie and takes her on a road trip in which the pair bond over talk of relationships and the difficulties in their lives. The play comes from Quiara Alegria Hughes, the Tony-nominated writer of In the Heights. Catch performances at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the MAC. 26 Miles continues through December 11. Tickets are $15 to $30 for adults, $10 to $20 for students and seniors. Visit kitchendogtheater.com.

Square Dance: A Community Project
Saturday, November 12, at Trinity River Audubon Center

You don't need a frilly skirt or even dance skills to participate in Square Dance: A Community Project. Organizers are promoting the event as an active, living form of art and inviting the public to take part in the communal project in front of the new Audubon Center. An official square dance caller from the North Texas Callers Association will tell you when to allemande left and do-si-do your partner, and, no, we didn't know there was an association of square dance callers here either. The Quebe Sisters Band will provide the music, and pictures of square dancers from the 1950s will be projected on the center. Admission is free, so bring a partner or find a new one at 6 p.m. Saturday. Visit cargocollective.com/squaredance2011.

Shut Up and Rumble Vertical Jam
Saturday, November 12, and Sunday, November 13, at The Overground Project

All the cool kids, the ones who know how to do flip tricks and aren't afraid to break bones once in a while, are brushing up on their Tony Hawk-style stunts for a chance at cash prizes at Shut Up and Rumble Vertical Jam. Skaters take to the ramps from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the mini ramp competition starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow. The Lash Outs and Fungi Girls also perform tomorrow, and Big Benders, American Werewolf, Academy, Greasy Cranks and Hood Rat will play Sunday. See professionals and amateurs bust moves, hopefully without busting their faces. A one-day pass is $15, two-day passes are $20. Visit Overground Project's Facebook page for more information.

Opening of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk
Sunday, November 13, at the Dallas Museum of Art

It feels like we've been waiting forever for the opening of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, even longer than we had to wait for Rick Perry to remember the third federal agency he would cut as president. Thankfully, the exhibit of the French designer's amazing duds is finally here and open to DMA members right now. Those of us without memberships only have to wait a few more days. Jenny Block made the whole school jealous when she got to meet Gaultier in person and see the collection on Thursday, but we'll be first in line to see Madonna's pointy-boob corset when The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier opens to the public at 11 a.m. Sunday. The frocks are on display through February 12. Tickets are $16 on weekdays, $20 on weekends, and DMA members get in free. Visit dm-art.org.
