The Mixmaster's Horror Movie Countdown, October 14: The Thing

Categories: Halloween

THIS is a beard.
It's only fitting, with The Thing *prequel hitting theaters this weekend, that for today's entry of our 31-day Horror Movie Countdown we take a look back at John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece The Thing - the director's first major studio film and the third of four Carpenter films starring Kurt Russell. Coincidentally, Carpenter's was itself somewhat a remake of 1951's THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, both inspired by John W. Campbell, Jr.'s 1938 novella Who Goes There?. They've been remaking Horror films for a lot longer than just the last ten or so years, kids!

The thing that causes Carpenter's The Thing to still hold up to this day - amongst many things like Dean Cundey's cinematography, Bill Lancaster's screenplay, Ennio Morricone's score, etc. - is the creature effects by Rob Bottin, the wiz behind other spooky special effects in Carpenter's The Fog as well as other Horror classics such as The Howling, Twilight Zone: The Movie, and our number 11 film Se7en. In any argument between practical effects vs. CGI, The Thing is a benchmark example of how a film now 29-years-old still holds up today over something that looks dated as soon as it hits theaters.

If you're planning on seeing the prequel this weekend or you just plain haven't seen The Thing, then you owe it to yourself as a movie watcher to see it immediately. They've even made it easy for you...The Thing is currently on Netflix Instant!

*Having seen the prequel already I can tell you that it's more like a premake. 75% remake in the first two acts and 25% prequel in the third act. And, unfortunately, it's 100% bad.

Most Memorable Scene:

As a kid when I first saw this scene, I was truly terrified that anytime I saw a defibrillator being used one someone in any other movie or TV show, that the victim's chest would then burst open and chomp down on the medic's hands. You can imagine what that was like for me during a certain scene featuring a defibrillator in another alien-centric yet completely tonally different movie from 1982...E.T.

The Thing's amazing practical effects are completely showcased here. Head spider!

Yesyesyes. One of the great horror scenes ever. Also, can we talk more about how annoying it is that they're remaking this?
