Welcome to the first installment of Profiles In Pictures, a photo series brought to you by The Mixmaster. Every couple of weeks, Profiles In Pictures will profile Dallas natives who, in some form or another, create. Shot by our intrepid photographer Sara Kerens (who shoots more than just food for our weekly Dish reviews), and accompanied by a Q&A with the subject, PIP offers a personal and environmental peek at these local creatives -- from craftspeople who create with their hands to designers who push pixels with a mouse.

This week, we take a quick look into the world of landscape architect Ches Campbell. See for yourself after the jump.

Who are you, what do you do, who do you do it for, and where do you do it?
I am Ches Campbell, a landscape architect working for a firm called Studio Outside over in Expo Park here in Dallas. I just recently joined the team after working for a large international design firm for the last 4 years.

What do you find the most satisfying about what you do, and why?
My job is different almost every day; it is rarely mundane. My career has given me the opportunity to travel to some amazing places like Shanghai, and now I'm happy to be working at a place where I am involved in more local projects that personally affect me. There are few things more satisfying than seeing an early concept sketch turn in to a final built project.

What is your favorite tool/special resource that allows you to do what you do?
I'm pretty old school, so I prefer sketching on trace paper with a felt tip pin when I can, but I use Adobe Photoshop more than anything. It's the most versatile tool for creating most types of presentation graphics. It's what I use to make things look pretty so we can convince clients to go with our designs.

What do you enjoy the most to do when you're not creating/working?
I try to get out and spend time with people as much as possible. Usually that means going out to eat at Mia's Tex-Mex, grabbing a beer at The Ginger Man, drinking coffee at The Pearl Cup, or hanging out on the porch. And the usual answers: listening to music, watching movies, doing laundry, traveling, etc. I'm also an avid photographer, so I'll often be seen walking around Dallas taking photos of vintage buildings and rusty trash cans.

If you could snap your fingers and immediately possess the knowledge/skills of an entirely different discipline, what would that be, and why?
I wouldn't mind having the knowledge and talent of my favorite theologian/author, C.S. Lewis. Other than that, I'd love to be able to design and build my own home or design and make my own clothes. But mostly, if I had the power to snap my fingers to do anything, it'd be to create more time to do all the things I want to do.

This Ches guys seems pretty cool. I'd like to see some of the work that he does, though. For all I know he could be posing as a landscape architect.

I was a coworker with him at SWA Dallas. Their website is www.swagroup.com. Ches is legitimate and very creative. You can trust that he is the real deal, very creative and extremely talented.
