The Complete, More or Less, Collection of Covers Performed By St. Vincent

I hear Pete's gone; wonder if I can be music editor aga ... excuse me, I've just been told: No, no way. Ah. Anyway. Doesn't mean I can't post this playlist that's been sitting on my desktop for way too long: a complete-ish collection of covers performed by St. Vincent, for whom DC9 at Night was quite clearly created.

Some of these covers, most live and all keepers, are familiars -- like, say, Nico's "These Days," one of the first thing I ever owned by Lake Highlands' Own (it dates back to '06). And Clark's been covering the Beatles' "Dig a Pony" since at least '07. But the playlist is estimable and varied (Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Big Black, Brian Eno, INXS, Dolly Parton, Neil Young), as are her collaborators (Beck, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, John Vanderslice). One in a series, word is; collect 'em all.

Live, From Reunion Arena, It's R.E.M. on MTV

Categories: Sound Bytes

Over on Unfair Park a little while ago I said my piece about R.E.M.'s unexpected farewell, conveyed via the band's website, and directed your attention to the band's 1986 stopover at the Fair Park Band Shell -- a must-have on this or any other day. I also reminded Pete about the '95 show at Reunion Arena, remnants of which exist on YouTube since MTV aired the first three songs -- "I Took Your Name," "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" and "Crush With Eyeliner" --live that night.

It was quite the scene -- cameras and cranes everywhere, and it wasn't till the encore ("So. Central Rain," two songs form the end) that it felt like The Good Ol' Days. Still, they shoulda filmed the opening act, some band named ... Radiohead, I think they're called?More >>

Sound Bytes: Kelly Clarkson's Album To Hit No. 1; U2, Jonases, AC/DC All Confirmed For Cowboys Stadium Gigs

Some quick news hits...
  • According to Billboard, the fourth full-length record from Burleson's own Kelly Clarkson, All I Ever Wanted, which was released just two days ago, will reach No. 1 on the trade magazine's album charts next week, with an estimated 200,000 records moved in its first week. It helps, no doubt, that Clarkson played Idol last night, Good Morning America on Tuesday, and is playing SNL on Saturday. It will be Clarkson's second album to reach No. 1; meanwhile, her 2007 release, My December, peaked at No. 2 on the chart.
  • Yesterday, the Morning News reported that both The Jonas Brothers and AC/DC are confirmed to perform at the new Cowboys Stadium this summer and that the organization was in talks to bring U2 in to town in the near future, as well. At this point, though, only the Jonases' date is set in stone--they'll play on Saturday, June 20, as the kickoff to their 44-date North American tour. No news on the AC/DC date just yet (although, given the band's current tour schedule, I'd guess it won't be until after June) or any specific U2 date. But, some encouraging news on the U2 front: Though, like AC/DC, the band hasn't yet announced a date for its Dallas show, its web site does now say that the band will be stopping in Dallas in either September or October. So consider that sucker confirmed, too.

Roy G. and The Biv have a new song for you to hear.

Kinda a slow day round the way here at DC9. Not too too much going on. Actually, that's not true. There's a lot, but not necessarily enough to constitute entire blog posts. Also, our blogging system was down for a bit before. Oh well.

On that note, let's end the day with a good ol' fashioned news round-up! Done and done...
  • Boston/Denton electronic dance-pop/'80s throwback act Roy G. and The Biv has a new free download available to fans today. The song's called "Runnin'" and, like all other RGB tracks, it's a throwback to the time of The Karate Kid and, I dunno, snap bracelets. Or were snap bracelets a '90s thing? I think they were a '90s thing. Anyway, check out the track here (or right-click this link to download the sucker). All kidding aside, it's a pretty decent track. More guitar than most RGB tracks, though. Catch RGB on March 18 at The Lounge, and keep an eye out for the group's debut full-length later this year.

A few quick items worth passing along...
And, yeah, that pretty much brings us up to date.

Sound Bytes: Download Smile Smile's "Silent Night" Cover, Listen To Black Tie Dynasty's "Christmas Time (feat. PPT)" And Hear Matthew And The Arrogant Sea's Newest Song

  • Smile Smile, perhaps Dallas' greatest pop duo that also happens to be an ex-couple, has a little treat over on its Myspace page for your listening please: A surprisingly touching and sweeping cover fo the famed Christmas class tune "Silent Night"--and you can download it, too, iff'n you feel so inclined, by visiting the band's ReverbNation page...
  • Meanwhile, it's not up for download far as I can tell, but over on Black Tie Dynasty's Myspace page, you can check out the band's pretty awesome "Christmas Time" track, which features the now-defunct PPT. Me? I'm just really a big fan of bells...
  • And, last but certainly not least, there's a new track over on Matthew and the Arrogant Sea's Myspage page this week. It's called "My Science Fiction Dream" and, yep, it's brand spankin' new--although it's really just frontman Matthew Gray doing his best Jeff Mangum performing the track solo for, it seems, some radio DJ. Either way, it's good. --Pete Freedman
