The Washington-based DJ team Nadastrom headlined at Lizard Lounge Saturday night, while the club filled with people flashing signs, showing midriffs and doing what the kids these days call dancing.
Meanwhile, Excuses hosted a showcase of local DJs at their Winter Thrust. All that in this week's Night Moves set by the Lek Brothers.
Zubar reacts to news that Jason Castro's Dallas tour date is just days away.
We'd really like to hear the thinking behind some of the costume choices our nightlife photographers caught out in Dallas last weekend.
Why do I always wait till Halloween night to come up with a costume? Thank god I've got this green body stocking, matching mask and blue running shoes. [Always Sunny reference, got it.]
Girls didn't go for my homemade sci-fi cartoon character costume last year... but what if I make a sci-fi cartoon character from a cardboard box?
At Excuses Saturday night, spinning for a bunch of clowns.
While a parade of wigs-only costumes strolled up Cedar Springs Saturday night, Excuses hosted a "Wiggin' Out" party (cheap cover for wearing a wig plus other clothing). DJ Walker spun downstairs, with Slider Jack, Planet Doobias and Dragon Lazer upstairs.
Check out more shots from this corner of Dallas' pre-Halloween party weekend in this week's Night Moves set from the Lek Brothers.
In keeping with Bodega de los Muertos tradition, they partied like this in Deep Ellum.
Halloween came early last weekend, even if the clubs were filled up Friday with people dressed like they're back in college. The scene at Carpe Diem was long on Authentic wear while DJ Inzo and DJ Hex spun in the downtown club.
Saturday night our nightlife squad stopped by the Bodega de los Muertos warehouse party beside the Double Wide, with Betdat, Convextion ERP, Ricky Simpson, and The Get Right Crew.
Dub Assembly's party Friday night at the Green Elephant featured a trio of visiting guest DJs: New York's I-Cue from Ne, Dread Foxx from Port Arthur, and Maneesh the Twister from San Francisco, all playing dubstep and drum and bass tracks.
Check out the event poster after the jump, and you'll find plenty more photos in this week's Night Moves set from Ray and Peter Lek.
Our trusty nightlife photographer tandem Ray and Peter Lek made the rounds this weekend, finding some low turnouts at a few places, but eventually hitting gold at their old stomping grounds at The Green Elephant for sets from favorite local DJ collective Dub Assembly and touring act Ultrablack. And what did they find? Finger-pointing, awkward dancing and teasing girl-on-girl not-quite-action. Y'know, the usual. Check it out.
Le Castle Vania spun at the Lizard Lounge this weekend, proving that vampire references never get old. Neither do vampires, come to think of it.
It was a long weekend for all of us, I guess, this past Labor Day weekend. But it was an especially long one, it appears, for our tandem nightlife photographers, Ray and Peter Lek, who spent four nights out documenting the scenes of Dallas after dark from Thursday through Sunday, hitting up a variety of locales along the way--a number of which you'll see in this week's photo set.
Thursday saw the brothers hanging out at Shade, capturing the techno sounds of London-based DJ Paolo Mojo on film. On Friday, the brothers stopped by Fallout Lounge for Black Friday with DJ's Keith P, Redsean, Tiny and Young Adult Friction, who seems to be a big Pains of Being Pure at Heart fan, if the name is any indicator. Saturday brought the Leks to the Lizard Lounge for DJ Le Castle Vania. And Sunday saw the brothers try somethig without a dance hook--or, not their usual one, at least--as the Lek's stopped in at the Lone Star Country Club in Coppell for a good ol' fashioned hootenanny.
Our nightlife shooting duo Ray and Peter Lek report a smaller crowd around Dallas clubs last weekend, and they wonder if college kids were actually getting some rest before the school year started.
As for this guy, finishing school is probably not on his horizon anytime soon, though he does know the proper way to hold a drink while grinding against a lady.
Our nightlife photo-bros headed out to DJ Inzo's set at Lift in Uptown and then swung by Suite Basement on Friday night. Then they caught Doc Martin at Afterlife on Saturday. I wonder which Youtube video some of these guys' dance moves came from...
Oh well, I guess it's just nice to finally see an occasion appropriate for a Cyber Dog outfit in Dallas.
Check more shots from the weekend's club scene in this week's Night Moves set from Lift and Suite and Afterlife.
Using the term "bandanna" loosely -- some might just be du-rags, keffiyehs or shirts -- but, used to whatever purpose, there were plenty of them out on the dance floor at Suite Basement last Friday night. Big J, Yeah Def and Vega all spun, and our nightlife photo crew was there to document it.
Saturday night, the Lek Brothers headed out to Zubar, where DJ Select and Schwa spun up front, and DJ Brett Johnosn kept things going out back.
Check more shots from the weekend's club scene in this week's Night Moves set.
Our nightlife photo team headed out to Fallout Lounge on Saturday night to catch a DJ set from Yppah at a release party for the Houston-based musician's new album They Know What Ghost Know.
Our nightlife crew began their weekend with the Kixpo pre-party at the Lounge on Elm Street Friday night, where DJs Sober and A1 spun and rappers Jabee and Playdough performed for the shoe-loving crowd.
By Saturday night, at least some folks on the floor were ready to go shoeless as New York DJ Tim Sweeney spun along with Redeye, James Warren and Feezy.
Our nightlife photo team of Ray and Peter Lek began their weekend with shots of the crowd at Austin-based DJ Chicken George's set at Suite Basement Friday night.
Saturday night after the DOMA showcase, DJ Nick Le Shade & DJ Hooligan spun at Shade, and our nightlife crew moseyed from there over to Fallout Lounge for Hot Flash! where six DJs spun in a small, action-packed setting.
Before leaving for Spain to launch their new record label, Ellum, much-loved local techno DJs Maetrik and Alta spun at their own going-away party on Tuesday night at Shade. DJ Redeye hosted the party, Blixaboy performed, too, and the Lek Brothers were there to catch it all on camera.
Trill Bass headlined Dub Assembly's three-year anniversary celebration at the Green Elephant on Friday night, with Mundo, Royal Highnuss and Thomas Allen opening.
You may already be somewhat familiar with the space, though; at last year's DOMA Showcase, the spot, then called Stout, featured some incredible performances from Salim Nourallah and Matthew and the Arrgoant Sea.
Now, the new spot? It's opening back up just in time for DOMA Showcase usage again, fortunately enough for us. In fact, the July 18 showcase takes place on the venue's opening weekend. Which, I'd say, gives area music fans--and us, too--about as good a reason as any to check the spot out firsthand and in person...
Patriotism swept across Dallas DJs' playlists last weekend like Michael Jackson tunes the week before--and on Friday night, Barcadia was no exception.
Out nightlife photo team caught up with the crowd there as Redeye spun patriotic songs (like the Team America: World Police anthem "America Fuck Yeah") over the crashing sounds of giant Jenga and Skee Ball. The Leks' night wrapped with Big J, Yeahdef and Tyrone Smiley ringing in Independence Day at Suite Basement.
We owe you a nightlife slideshow here on DC9, after a quiet time at our nightlife crew's favorite clubs two weeks ago. Luckily, last weekend was so chock full of Night Moves goodness, we're making amends here with a two-fer Tuesday pair of photo sets from the Lek Brothers.
In Friday night's set, check out shots from the Suite basement, with Big J of the Clever Monkeys, and Zubar, where DJ Select, DJ A1 and Baby Ruthless spun.
Saturday night, we made sure to catch photos at Kinki Lounge, where reality TV hopefuls were lined up for their chance at being Ray J's newest girl, on VH1's For the Love of Ray J 2. From there, the night moves on to Lizard Lounge, with AC Slater and Kill the Noise.
We already mentioned the candlelight vigil for Michael Jackson in Duncanville Thursday night here on DC9. Later that night, though, Dallas DJs did their part to keep the pop legend on everyone's mind, while plenty of folks turned up in their vintage MJ-wear.
As Tyrone Smiley & DJ Niro spun old Michael Jackson favorites at Zubar and DJ A1 spun at Barcadia, photographer Gloria Levario out and about taking the shots you'll find here in our slideshow.
Barcadia celebrated its one-year anniversary last Friday night, with sailor hats, pin-up girls and the tribute band Queen For A Day onstage, and on Saturday, our nightlife crew hit up the Lizard Lounge for their annual "Meltdown: Summer Edition" party. Filo and Peri spun in the main room, while DJ Merritt and DJ Michael Todd on the roof.
"How was I supposed to know you were serious about us both wearing the makeup tonight?"
Keith P celebrated his birthday at the Cavern last Friday night, and the Lek Brothers were there to catch photos of the scene as the birthday boy spun goth, punk and '80s new wave with DJ's Tommy Boy and Pretty Vacant.
Saturday night, the Leks caught up with Dub Assembly and SAS (DJ Schwa and DJ Select) for their face-off at Zubar.
Zubar was especially crazy Friday night. At one point, guy in the top right even unfurrowed his brow.
Friday night our nightlife team made a long-overdue return to Zubar to catch Broken Teeth (Prince William & Keith P) and Jason Mundo in the back room, and DJ Select and DJ A1 spinning classic hip hop, reggae and dancehall in the front, ever-mindful not to run afoul of the law by making too much noise.
Saturday night took them to Lizard Lounge, where Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem and Hercules & Love Affair spun for the assembled crowd of hipsters and go go dancers. The Lek Brothers report one alarming side effect of the smoking ban -- nothing out there to cover up the urine smell in the clubs. OK, then!
Photos from the clubs are up in this week's Night Moves set.
Our nightlife photo team marked the long weekend's midway point with stops at two smaller, intimate clubs packed with amped-up crowds.
We begin at Aura Lounge, where Schwa, Brett Johnson and Redeye supplied the night's soundtrack, and finish at the Cavern with Mike Cina, Jason Douglas & The Cosmic Cocks.
Major props to CBS 11 and "award-winning reporter" J.D. Miles for following up on our RecShopcoverage from earlier this week by a) adding nothing new to the story, b) blatantly filming a computer logged onto DC9 without giving any credit to the paper (although, score, you can like totally see my byline), and c) using freelance photographer Gloria Levario's images from the event, shot on assignment for us, without permission from either us or her.
Also: Way to spell the name of your story's main source incorrectly (it's "Shing," guys, not "Sheen").
You guys rock. Just glad we could help!
(For what it's worth, CBS 11 tells us they intended to credit us, but couldn't because of a "technical glitch.")
Between the Rec Shop arrests and vigilant tire-clamping outside Minc Lounge, it was a treacherous weekend to be out partying in Dallas.
Still, our intrepid nightlife photo team made it to Fallout Lounge for local DJs One & Oneiza and F*ck You Pay Me on Saturday night, and still managed to catch Parisian house DJ Phil Weeks at Aura in Uptown on Sunday. Check out Ray and Peter Lek's work in our slideshow here.
The Lek Brothers made it a triple shot Saturday night last weekend. First up, they hit Plush for San Francisco-based Kaskade's DJ set. Later, it was off to the Lizard Lounge for Hot Pink Delorean, an experienced drum and bass production team from Boston. And the last stop? The local DJ lineup at Fallout Lounge, Hot Flash!, with Yeah Def, Schwa, Genova and Kiltron.
Saturday night's storm -- and people's recent health concerns with hanging around tightly packed, hot, sweaty venues -- all combined to keep the crowds down to a miniumum around lots of Dallas parties last weekend. The Lek Brothers send word that a few clubs were more or less vacant during the peak weekend hours.
But -- but -- Woolfy, Dub Assembly and F*ck You Pay Me all played the Cavern, and DJ's Select and Schwa spun at Zubar. For a look at the true die-hard party set, check out our slideshow here.
Friday was a busy night in the Dallas club scene, what with Dub Assembly at the Green Elephant alongside Finland's DJ Cloud, the Broken Teeth crew at Zubar, and Shuttle playing the "D Town Boogie" party at Club Dada. Follow the Lek Brothers through the night's madness in our slideshow here.
With the Oak Cliff Art Crawl through the Bishop Arts District, Saturday night saw a few gallery parties, including a Beatles art tribute at Soda Gallery with an appearance by the Lollipop Shoppe. You can check out those photos here.
