David Allan Coe Cancelled His Dallas Show Due to Having to "Perform Outside"

Last night, just before his scheduled performance at the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill in Dallas, so-called "outlaw" David Allan Coe packed his rebel flag-adorned equipment and hit the road, leaving venue staff angry and fans perplexed.

According to a message from Gas Monkey's GM Alex Mendosa posted to the venue's official Facebook page at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, it was Coe who pulled the show's plug, leaving the venue and a hearty crowd in a bind.

"We are sorry to all the disappointed Gas Monkey fans that came out to see Mr. David Allan Coe," Mendoza wrote. "We did everything in our power to try and make the show happen! Unfortunately not everyone in our industry operates honestly."

Richard Rawlings, the star of Fast 'N Loud, the telvision show which the massive bar is inspired by, also posted an apology to anyone who made it to the show last night. In his typically up-front fashion, he pulled fewer punches than Mendosa did in the message he posted on his official Facebook page and Twitter account.

"I just heard that David Allan Coe bailed on his fans tonight and canceled his show at Gas Monkey Bar N' Grill. First of all, I want to apologize to all the fans who were let down tonight. Long story short, he tried to extort us for extra money up front to 'perform outside' despite the fact that that wasn't in our contract. A member of his camp HIGHLY disrespected Alex, the GM at the Bar N' Grill, and we don't stand for that. I hope David Allan Coe realizes that his fans are the reason he's as popular as he is."

According to some attending the show, it was rather apparent that something was going on. Upon the reported, heated exchange between a member of Coe's team and the venue's management, Coe had his gear loaded, ready to leave within minutes after their decision to not play was made.

As always, there are two sides to every blown-up gig. But there aren't any apologies or messages regarding last night's cancellation posted to Coe's Facebook page, website or Twitter account, nor have a phone call and emails to Coe's management been returned at this time.

For fans of local, loud country with outlaw swagger, however, there's a great bit of news to be gleened from the events of last night. Dallas' Mo Robson Band, the scheduled opening act who was to begin playing at 9:00 p.m., reportedly turned in a hell of an unexpectedly extended set. Robson, one of the area's most gifted country songwriters has primarily played in solo acoustic settings of late, but a return to full-band form will certainly be most welcome.

Refunds for people who purchased advanced tickets through Ticketfly are available through the online outlet. As of now, it is unclear as to whether Coe's show will be rescheduled or not. (Seems doubtful, but who knows?)

We'll post any updates we receive from the venue or from Coe if they are made available to us.

This is a tough one.  On one hand, if Coe's people provided FOH, then yes, inside to outside could be a problem from the production side.  However, it is no secret that DAC is a pain to deal with.  I've seen agents get into a game of "you take him" here in Nashville.

Note to future agents of DAC.  When you sell him, the FIRST thing you do is distance yourself from his behavior.  I'd go with the following.

"Can I tell you what he is going to do?  No!  What has he ever done that would make you think that?  I will tell you this.  I would have more liquor than you usually have on hand, because his fans' livers are going to punish your alcohol supplies."

Then, wait for the probably angry phone call from the promoter/venue owner.  He is and always will be consistently inconsistent. You've been warned.

This interesting story had me google who Mr. Coe is. Almost immediately I found stories similar to this regarding performances in the past. Although this evidence is anecdotal, I tend to believe that this behavior is commonplace for this band.

To set the rumors straight mr.coe agent was told and described from gmbg of an indoor show. When band arrived it was clear that it was a big outdoor set up. Outdoor shows cost more aand even with mr.coe offering to take a huge pay cut offered to fo the outdoors show for half of what it would have cost, I personally heard alex agree to pay the difference. Then as a member of management came to the bus to find out abiut the show they was explained the he agreement. Then alex ran up denying saying anything of an agreement grabbing ms.coe and yell calling her a lying and he wasnt going to pay anything. That is what s made the decision to leave. The contract was change from original the name calling ,grabbing ms.coe , the bc and was there at 3pm ready to go. We do not and will nit do business with venues that try and munipulate mr.coe

You know he's playing Willie's Picnic on the 4th.  Someone better tell him it's an outside gig.  Bet he won't give Willie any crap.  Something tells me maybe he wasn't supposed to play another gig so geographically and chronologically close to the Picnic, and had to find a way out.  Just a guess.

Club owners and musicians fighting?!?! Shit, that never happens. Haters hating whenever they get the chance? Always happens.

Aw,  you need to know the real story of DA.

Coe claims he did serious pen time in Ohio for killing a man.  He did do pen time.

For possessing Feelthy Books. Six years,  as I recall.  Nobody has ever found any record of a murder.  He did,  however,  have a great passion for Feelthy Picture Books!

DA was sued before in Dallas.  Around '77 Whiskey River, across from Old Town on Greenville,  was the hottest bar in town.  DA was playing there.  A couple young lawyers had the Sheriff seize his bus to satisfy the Judgment,  gave DA a couple minutes to get his stuff off,  had a wrecker haul it off.

DA sent word young lawyers had a hit on them,  using one of his motorcycle gang friends.

I checked with a friend at Texas Department of Corrections,  who had most of the leadership as his guests in Huntsville.  He asked around,  said Coe mumbled about it to somebody,  they all laughed at him.  Now.  The one for Ozzie Osbourne for pissing on the Alamo while wearing his wife's dress and high heels,  that one was actually out there ...

The real Dumb Fuck is whoever booked him.  He's been trading on his bullshit persona,  used to drive an old hearse around Nashville,  since he got out of prison in Ohio.

What an easy breach of contract lawsuit.

Maybe a good thing.  Last show I saw at HOB, he three screaming treble laden guitars and no bass. Oh and that wacky vocal-chorus thing he likes to sing through.

Mo Robson Band saves the day.

This is no surprise.  he's a piece of shit and has been mailing it in his whole career.

Cause singing classics like "Nigger Fucker" sound better sung outdoors...

What an outlaw! Can't play outside without extra money? What a complete phony!

DAC asked for $3K above guarantee for no reason other than he thought the venue wouldn't have a choice other than to give it to him. Total BS but the venue caved and offered him $1500. Told him to take it or leave it and he left it. Sadly, he has a long history of doing this kind of thing.

This reminds me of the debacle that Granada had to go through with Crystal Castles a few years ago.

@Joshstruckoutagain @rfwbooking

And, by the way, Joshstruckoutagain, I tried typing this reply in the message board on the Dallas Observer blog and there is something wrong with that editor. It kept changing the spelling of the words, leaving certain letters out and even complete words and punctuation. I had to create this reply in Microsoft Word then copy and paste it into the blog. Don’t blame RFWBooking if they had the same trouble as I did. Ok, now you can go back to your hero worship of that douchebag, Richard Rawlings!

@Joshstruckoutagain @rfwbooking

Just from watching the show, Fast N Loud, you can pretty much tell that Richard Rawlings is a douche who believes he is so special that everyone should feel that they are fortunate that he allows them to do business with him and that he should always get a discount. Richard Rawlings is a typical car salesman who is never fair in his business practices and treats everyone as if they are beneath him. He should really enjoy what he has right now because it will not last! Eventually even the people he has fooled will wise up and see through his BS. David Allen Coe did!

Ruddy has been absent as of late. Maybe he found a blog in one of the other cities he lived in to be a major asshole.

By the way Bevis is right. Hillbillies calling out other hillbillies. It's just not for East Texas anymore.
