Perfect Pussy
With Potty Mouth, Stymie and Orgullo Primitivo
Three Links, Dallas
Thursday, June 5, 2014

No one should've come to a Perfect Pussy concert expecting it to last very long. A scorched-earth approach is just the commodity this Syracuse band trades in. But what was unexpected about their visit to Three Links on Thursday night was why it ended when it did. For all the bile that singer Meredith Graves spews out in her performances, she saved an especially withering critique for the end of the concert that was aimed squarely at the night's show flyer.

"I am not stoked," Graves declared, her words pouring out in a quick but calm stream. "We shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable," she added, referring to herself and the ladies of the all-female opening band, Potty Mouth. "Just because you come to a hardcore show, you expect to see tits."

It was a remarkable speech and certainly an unexpected way to end a show that had only lasted for 20 minutes. Needless to say, the crowd was more than a little surprised by the sudden turn of events, not least because the flyer in question -- which depicted two topless women in bondage, strung up by their wrists -- had been removed from the venue prior to the show, reportedly at Graves' insistence.

To call the episode a rant, however, would be unfair, and also miss the point of her anger. "I feel things in here," Graves said, pointing at her heart. "As women, we're taken less seriously at the work we do because we work hard. When you see tits on a flyer you feel lonely, weird and isolated."

From there, she made the disquieting connection with the horrific murders that happened recently in Isla Vista, California, saying that "men feel so entitled to women's bodies" that they'll "kill them" in order to feel like they're in control.

If ever such words felt like they had real conviction, this was the time. For those brief 20 minutes that the band had been playing, Graves' performance was one continuous burst of rage, though in this instance rendered close to futile: As a matter of course, she wrings her entire body for every ounce of effort she can muster, but her vocals were almost completely drowned out in the mix last night. Only her highest-pitched screams made an audible sound over the thrashing of her band mates.

In many ways, that's the point: Perfect Pussy's live show is such a mess of noise, so hellbent on assaulting the audience, that picking out songs is next to impossible. It's also perhaps the band's major shortcoming, because musically speaking the loudest, craziest components aren't terribly interesting. It seeks to destroy, but doesn't. The only truly menacing part of it is the bleating, droning keys of Shaun Sutkus.

Had to see what she was so pissed about, but from actually reading the article, Jeff is in her corner.

The review sets up this notion of "punk authenticity" for the sole purpose of refuting it, and highlights the juxtapositions inherent in the performance.  He's lukewarm about their music, but throws his support behind their politics.

Am I missing something?  Or did Meredith just have an overblown, knee-jerk reaction because he pointed out what she was wearing while she was ON STAGE?

Garbage review. Just a fraction away from being misogynist.... As it is, Jeff, you blasted her good - really told her.

You are obviously hell bent on grinding an axe with the young lady.
What's the matter, do powerful, self-expressed women intimidate you? Sure seems like it... If I was your boss, you'd be looking for another job after that piece of beating-the-woman-over-the-head writing.

Jeff,

I'm going to have to say I'm really disappointed.  Judging her authenticity by how she was dressed is not what should've been addressed. The origin of the name would've been a point by itself questioning their disconnect. If Iceage was performing and complained about about a suggestive male poster, would you criticize how they look? Next time when criticizing a female artist on her authenticity or performance, look at her skills, effort, performance....anything but how she's dressed.

You miss the point entirely, you hack. And by the way, Meredith didn't cut the set short to address that bullshit flyer. Perfect Pussy has never played longer than 20 minutes any time I've seen them, which would be three times now after this last Three Links show. They played every song on the album, and once they were done she addressed the flyer. Way to twist the reality of a situation and embelish so as to have enough material to flesh out an already pointless and unnecessary article.  The fact that you even felt the need to comment on Meredith's attire is enough to prove that you are totally clueless. Bad form.

Sincerely,

Callan S. Cotten

When you get groped at a show, when someone thinks they can grab your crotch or chest, when they tell you to get over it when you get upset, when they follow you out into the street, when you don't go to shows anymore, when you only stand at the back, when you've felt any of these things trying to have a good time at a show then you can talk. Until then, try listening and ending this behavior when it happens in front of you instead of attacking the person who stands up and calls out this BS.

This coming from a band called "Perfect Pussy"? Oh boy, kids these days. *shakes head* They don't know the half of it, they just like to run their flapper any chance they get. Well listen here missy, let me tell you a story! Back in the 80s I was the singer for a very successful hair metal band called "Vivid Scrotum". We made a name for ourselves real quick in the DFW scene and were at the cusp of going national when I threw it all away. Our shredding guitars, big hair, monster hooks and my infamous spandex pants that vividly showed off my scrotum were unparalleled at the time! At first it was an exhilarating ride that seemed like a dream come true but it was not long before all I was to those crowds of teenage girls was a singing nuttsack. I couldn't get through a song without some underage fluzzy taking a tug at my bag of beans. It was great at first but over time I felt like I was no longer an artist but instead nothing more than eye candy for a bunch of ball-craving adolescents. Eventually all of the testicular attention drove me away from doing the thing that I once did love. I live a quiet life now with a wife in kids but I still catch myself daydreaming and wishing for a random passerby to take a quick swipe at my ole scrote. An old man can dream right?

The Moral: Enjoy this while you can Perfect Pussy, one day you will miss the attention!

I wouldn't disagree with what she said, but this was the wrong week for that at 3 Links. Give 'em some love.

Then the band, as most usually do, should provide their own flyer artwork to the promoter or venue hosting the show. They should be thankful their show was hosted by a promoter and venue who cares enough to make a poster for them to help promote their show. If you don't send out touring posters yourself, you loose the right to criticize the ones that are made by someone else..

Their only full length album is like 30 minutes long, so I'm not sure how much more people were expecting here.

I also don't really think there's an "inappropriate time" to speak out about sexism in a society as deeply patriarchal as this one, where as we speak, men are talking about how they sympathize or even appreciate a misogynist shooter, in a state where women's reproductive rights are constantly under attack, and so on. This flyer (which, I might add, also just looks shitty) is not the only issue, it's just one of many things out there in the masculinist punk scene that can trigger deep-seated frustration at all of the fucked up things women continually experience.

Finally, if you're uncomfortable with politics in your music, just don't go to a punk show. Please.

How did she know that the "women"in the flyer weren't transgender. Perfect Pussy and other bands should really start being sensitive to the transgender community. Just another example of cis-oppression!

This is completely unacceptable. How is what she is wearing and how she looks have anything to do with this article.  Very disappointed in the Dallas Observer and the writer to partake in such sexist and misogynistic writing. If this happened with a male singer, there would have been no mention of what he wore or his looks.

What do her looks have to do with anything? What a weird thing to point out in this article.

@bvckvs Is she though? Because what I see is a failed attempt to convey a fear that all women have. I get it. Guys are sick of hearing us talk about how hard it is to be a woman, but most guys will never understand what it's like to be afraid to walk from your car to your apartment in the dark. I don't have enough fingers for the women I know who have been raped. I consider myself one of the "lucky ones" because I haven't been. But even I've had managers who couldn't keep their hands off me. Just a few months ago, I was driving in Dallas at night and a man (clean-cut, looked about 30) walked up to the passenger seat of my car while I was stopped at a stop light and tried to open the door. I have no idea what he wanted, and I'm really really glad I didn't have to find out. Ask any woman, and she has a dozen stories just like that. So, sorry, but you're going to have to put me in there with all the other "crazy bitches" who sometimes just want to be treated like humans.

@chix_wix_dix Does it matter if they are transgender or not? I mean it seems what she is says still applies either way.

@skylarlynn Yes, you make an excellent point there, and my apologies that that came off wrong. I adjusted the paragraph to try clarifying the point, which had more to do with the question of looking "authentically" punk, and the dissonance of being a normal-looking person who's filled with such fury when she performs. (Perceptions both.) Obviously that has no bearing on whether a person is, or especially has the right to be, upset, especially in a situation where they're made to feel uncomfortable. My ability to properly articulate that unfortunately failed me at 2:30.

@bvckvs @Graygrrrl Engaging in more gaslighting. Get a grip dude. You obviously have a problem with women having self agency.

mick8535
mick8535

@bvckvs @Graygrrrl NO dude, she isn't transfering ANYTHING, you coot. She is talking about the phenomenon of what happens when women are sexualized in situations. You have no right to comment on that, and certainly no right to talk down to Graygrrrl by trying to be all psychologist on her an dominating her with your all so smart distinctions. Get a life. You are the type of males women need to worry about. Go back home and whack off to your little Playboy, and stay out of places where women go, as you are obviously clueless.

ohstop
ohstop

@bvckvs @Graygrrrl Nooo.  What the original commenter is talking about is more broadly what it is like to be a woman at a show.  How sexism affects women/queer/trans*/POC/differently-abled folks ability to enjoy a damn show without getting made to feel scared or shitty or like we're here for your personal enjoyment.

Further, nice try on the 'transference' word drop, brah, but you totally used that term incorrectly.  Maybe you were reaching for some kind of logical fallacy that didn't exist because in actuality you simply missed the point.  (Also, transference is a part of life and totally is not at all inherently unhealthy.  But nice try, smart guy.)

Try shutting up and listening instead.

@paulpsycho78 @gaucho Oh yes it is. Its totally punk. If you don't like it, speak your mind in terms of what you don't like about it, but at least have the grace to give them respect.

@Sarah O' @scott11111111 I dunno....it looks like she totally missed an opportunity to call out those responsible for the flyer to me and play some effin music and earn the respect from those who don't know "Perfect Pussy's" central message.  As I only know it now in hindsight.

acleaver1

@jeff.gage Questioning someone's "authenticity" is something that is used in many subcultures to control, shame, and ostracize people.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Furthermore if you don't understand that punk style is and always has been as varied as the music, you have no place writing about punk.

acleaver1
acleaver1

@bvckvs You are proving Meredith's point every time you comment. You are dismissing her views as invalid, you are calling her a "crazy bitch" which is both misogynist and dehumanizing.

Calling women crazy is one of the many ways misogynist doucebags like yourself attempt to gaslight them and make them seem like they are less than men. So basically, as a proudly feminist heterosexual man, I would just like to say FUCK YOU!

ohstop
ohstop

@bvckvs  "In TRUTH, many women go about their lives completely unafraid, and without getting raped for it."

I love it when men tell women about their realities as if our own don't count.  Piss off, dude.  What the hell do you know?

donttroll

@bvckvs @ohstop How does she treat herself as a piece of meat? By going onstage and performing her heart out? By wearing lowcut shorts? Should she wear a burka and stay in the kitchen? Is that your idea of how a women should act?
How about she is a fucking human being and deserves respect, not to be treated like shit because she doesn't fit into your image of what a woman should be.
Guess what, you don't have to walk outside afraid that someone is going to shout comments/grope/follow/etc. No man does and we need to stop blowing it off as if it's not a big deal, or that they are a crazy bitch because they believe they should not live with that fear. Or perhaps you think she is a crazy bitch because she is speaking out for her rights as a human being?

So how about this, stop being a troll and try some fucking empathy.
