Photo by Danny Fulgencio, because as a predominantly non-music photographer he wasn't even nominated. We don't play favorites.
Here they are: The best music photographers in town. 252 people responded to our open call for nominations a couple weeks ago. There were some 80+ photographers named. Our panel of experts went through the images captured by every one of them and voted for what they thought was the best work, and the field is now narrowed to 12. Each name you see below is linked to that person's web site -- it is a distinct pleasure to peruse the photography you'll find there. You can also order prints from these folks; details and/or contact information is available on most of their sites as well.

The Best Music Photographer in North Texas: Finalists

Bill Ellison

Andi Harman

Allan Hayslip

Mike Mezeul

Danny Raybon

Sound Check Dallas

In the coming weeks, we'll introduce you to each of these people and their work, and then we'll hold a public vote to determine the winner. We're excited about the process -- while we certainly stand by the quality of the photography you see here, these are by no means the only talented people documenting live music around here. We encourage you to go through the nominations at your leisure and find your own favorites.

I have become a fan of central track because of Kathy Tran. The clarity and energy her photos have are inspiring to me. I hope to run into her one day so she can capture some of my street style. I love Dallas art!

I am true fan of Kathy Tran. I have watched her progress as an artist over the pass years and I am amazed. I am impressed in the way in which she captures individuals and objects in the most intimate way. Her photos tell stories, invoke emotions and take you on a journey. It has a edge that most art lack. Kathy Tran is able to photograph everyday things and people in a way that makes viewers revaluate the definition of beauty; things that artist look over and deem is dark and gritty Kathy Tran finds attraction. The availability to be a diverse artist and risky taker is what going to take Kathy Tran to the next level. She is definitely an artist to look out for in the next years.

The Mike kid has nice photos.  Not quite sure why the Sound Check person made the list, but I'm glad Bill did.  His work is always nice!

Allan Hayslip here. Legitimate complaints about omissions--and there are tons of great shooters not represented here--notwithstanding, looking thru these websites I'm impressed not only with the talent and readily-discernable style of these different shooters, but also the fact that there's so little overlap among our respective portfolios…we all seem to have found niches that suit our respective styles.

I'd be proud to show with any/all of these folk (and many others), some of whom I've just discovered thanks to this article. Maybe the Observer can put together something as part of this topic in a music-friendly gallery…the Kettle or Dada's back room come to mind. I have this idea that a selection of the photographers' images could rotate through on a set of (rented) large digital monitors, and maybe the Observer could arrange to have someone there to print/sell prints, which the shooters could sign, on the spot to raise money for worthy cause.

Just an idea for a way to keep things positive for something that is necessarily subjective and never going to please everyone. After all, can't we all agree that advocacy for a robust scene, however selectively edited, is probably a good thing?

Good to see Bill on the list but where is Carl Dunn?

I think you got lazy when looking for the "top music photographers"

Mike Brooks photos are magical. I mean he could take a picture of a turd and you would be like "Man I want to be where that turd is".
Not that the other photos aren't great, they are. It's just that there is something special about Brooks.
Sound Check Dallas, Ed Steele and Kathy Tran would be the runners up.

Some glaring omissions there, Kiernan. Most notably: Sean Berry.

I'm not saying these photographers aren't good -- I'm saying your list is lacking in content.

What we really want to know is who are the best music photographers who make sandwiches and use effective grammar.

@janikphoto  must be talking about Mike Mezeul, that Mike Brooks guy is older than dirt....I agree about Bill though!

@angelampatterson  When a hip local media outlet declares who's who, who are you to question it?

Seriously, couldn't there just be links to the portfolios and let that be the end of it? This article is the cookbook for stitching together emperor's new clothing.

@lebowski300 LOL - Hip media outlet. That's a good one. I know some incredible concert photogs but dang it, the one I'm thinking of lives mid-cities. LOL...... He also made Gene Simmons look pretty. That's saying a LOT
