Sleep well, sweet t-tail.
This music blog takes its name from the opening line of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Dallas," a song written in the early '70s and recorded most famously by his trio with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock, The Flatlanders.

Have you ever seen Dallas from a DC-9 at night?

On Monday, after 49 years in the air, the last of the DC-9 aircraft took its final flight. The plane, manufactured by McDonnell-Douglas before it merged with Boeing, was introduced to the U.S. by Delta Airlines, and Delta operated yesterday's final flight, from Atlanta to Minneapolis and back.

You can still have the experience Gilmore's referring to, though. In fact, "Dallas" seems to rings truer with every shiny new addition to the skyline. The machines change, but you know what they say about the song.

Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Well Dallas is a jewel, oh yeah, Dallas is a beautiful sight. And Dallas is a jungle but Dallas gives a beautiful light. Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?

Well, Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down.
But when you are up, she's the kind you want to take around.
But Dallas ain't a woman to help you get your feet on the ground.
Yes Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down.

Well, I came into Dallas with the bright lights on my mind,
But I came into Dallas with a dollar and a dime.

Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eye.
A steel and concrete soul with a warm hearted love disguise.
A rich man who tends to believe in his own lies.
Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes.

It's Butch Hancock's song.  BH wrote many of the songs that Joe Ely and Jimmy Dale sing.  They were all in the Flatlanders together, with Lloyd Maines (Natalie's dad)  But, many of JE and JD's songs are Butch's

Technically not true. DC-9s are flying over DFW with regularity every night. The MD 80/MD 88/Super 80 that AA flies were all built and registered as DC 9-80/DC 9-88. All are variants of the original DC 9-10.

@TheRealFJM Technically it IS true, the DC-9 doesnt fly over dallas anymore, the MD80/83 does, but the MD88 does not as that is a Delta plane and they dont fly those here. And yes I realize it is a variant, but it isnt a DC-9
