Some of the founding members of longtime local rap stalwart Poor Vida Productions, have teamed up with Media 13 for a major project: This summer, they'll screen the feature-length documentary We From Dallas. The film will tell an oral history of the Dallas hip-hop scene through a series of comprehensive, rare and intimate sit-down interviews. Covering a span of almost 20 years, artists like Mr. Pookie, Headkrack and Pikahsso narrate their firsthand experiences in building the local hip hop culture as we know it. Until now, the untold story of Dallas rap has never been compiled so extensively. From the graffiti, to the breakdancing, to the underground rap records you grew up on, it's all in this film. Today, we've got the exclusive trailer debut.

Executive producers King Hollis and John Huffman IV, co-producers Islam Sesalem and Joel Salazar, and director Teddy Cool have been working together toward this moment since February of 2011.

"Like any documentary, this project went through many evolutions and many different ideas of what story we would tell. ... In the end we wanted to empower the people of Dallas with the knowledge of their own story. Hip-hop started in the East but it grew here in Dallas pretty darn quickly!" Salazar says.

The artists aren't the only ones giving a history lesson in We From Dallas. Teaser shots in the trailer show that D Magazine's Zac Crain (former Dallas Observer music editor and one-time mayoral candidate), and super producer Symbolyc 1 and legendary rapper The D.O.C will also give interviews, among many others. It seems that the documentary is truly covering all sides of the spectrum. That's not surprising, considering the team behind it is one of the most qualified in the city of Dallas to tell this story.

"Knowledge is power and we hope the community and people in other communities are inspired to go out and make some dope hip-hop," Salazar says. "Take what we have done and run with it."

After a couple of local screenings at the end of the summer, We From Dallas will do a big fall festival run. An official premiere date has yet to be announced, but keep an eye on their Facebook page for news. This film is an important work, kids. It's not to be missed.

I had a cassette bootleg (bought out of a trunk) of that Nemesis LP that D.O.C. was showing.  Then I bought their first real label CD and it was a shitty version of the same album.  They sounded like they got produced.
