The O's

This is not your everyday Billboard chart. Each week, we'll tell you which bands are selling in the fine record shops in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where we consumers of music have impeccable taste.

Record Store Day is still having an effect on the sales at local independent record shops; however, a few other factors are causing an increase in numbers as well.

Lance Price, CD Source owner, says that most of CD Source's top 20 titles continued to be Record Store Day releases. "The only non-Record Store Day titles to make the Top 20 were Phoenix (both regular and deluxe versions), Kid Cudi and Flaming Lips," says Price. "All of them came out in the last two weeks."

Mark Church, sales associate at Good Records, is seeing similar results with a few changes as well. "Record Store Day releases still make up part of the charts," says Church. "However, The O's benefited from an instore performance which shot them to No. with their new release Thunderdog as well as bringing a couple of their older releases to numbers 7, 8 and 9."

According to Price, in addition to still having a good amount of titles left, CD Source was able to get restocks on a fair number of others, even though they are limited. "Many of this year's Record Store Day releases were very original concepts," says Price. "The Elliott Smith 7-inch includes four unreleased outakes from his classic Either/Or album. The Band's Last Waltz features three 180-gram LPs, all original packaging with embossing and two foils and a 12-page booklet. That album has so many highlights with the amazing lineup of guest performers. It's definitely one of the best live albums ever made. Joan Jett is on translucent yellow vinyl and includes an enhanced CD of the album with bonus tracks and live footage. The Flaming Lips Zaireeka LP box requires four turntables as the LPs are intended to be played simultaneously. Sounds like a good reason to have a turntable party!"
