The Grammys are Good for Something, at Least: Dallas Record Stores Get a Sales Bump

Categories: Best Of

This is not your everyday Billboard chart. Each week, we'll tell you which bands are selling in the fine record shops in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where we consumers of music have impeccable taste.

CD Source owner Lance Price says the Grammys still seem to be effecting who is rising to the top at his store. "Fun. was number one by a wide margin, probably because of their Grammy appearance and winning 'Best New Artist,'" says Price.

"Mumford & Sons, Lumineers, Gotye, Rihanna, Frank Ocean and Miguel all made appearances on the Grammys as well," says Price. " Mumford & Sons were obviously enjoying themselves when they took part on the Levon Helm tribute, The Weight. Their enthusiasm was contagious."

Mark Church, sales associate at Good Records, was surprised by their top albums this week. "Unknown Mortal Orchestra hits the top 2 spots," says Church. "They're some enjoyable fuzzy pop band from America and New Zealand, and out of nowhere, last years Beach House release Bloom flies up the chart."

Price finds himself taking a walk down memory lane as a Texas native climbs the charts. "Disc 2 of the Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood reissue contains nine tracks from a live show in Philadelphia in 1983," says Price "Larry, our store manager, and I saw him that year at Tango on Lower Greenville. That was the club with the frogs on top! We both worked for record stores at the time and CBS Records gave us free passes to check out this 'great new blues singer/guitarist from Texas'. I'm looking forward to listening to that disc."
