The O's at November's DOMAs. This band is already on my list -- who else should be?
Hello from your new music editor. I have now managed to get a bed into an apartment and sleep on it for one night, so the next step is finding ways to not spend time on it. I think I'm going to like this town -- I already spent a chocolate milk and vodka addled night at the Double Wide shouting along with The Lash Outs and I found the quickest bike route from my place to Good Records. And now I need your help.

Tell me what you're up to or what your friends are up to or what you wish you and your friends were up to. Give me a few parties you think I should crash. Specifically, as the title of this here blog posts suggests, name me your favorite bands and venues anywhere in the vicinity, and I will make it a point to track them down in the coming weeks and months.

I'm a blank slate at this point. There is no particular scene or band or genre or anything I'm attached to, so fire away in the comments or our Twitter or Facebook pages. See you out there!

Keep up with DC9 at Night on Twitter or Facebook.

From the perspective of someone in a band, I have to say hands down that La Grange, Dada & The Doublewide all have/had the best engineers and rooms to play in specifically in regards to sound.  There are obviously a few venues we haven't played so I know that others might be as good, but with authority I can say that those venues consistently make this keyboardist happy.  There's a lot of diversity in this town and I like lots of different bands for different reasons.  For big sound I love the Boom Boom Box (even though they don't seem to play anymore).  To see a really good stage show I think the Virgin Wolves and Scary Cherry are great.  When I want to harken back to my core as a lover of goth and ethereal music, I go to Blackstone Rangers.  Bands that always surprise me and make me want to dissect their music would be Nervous Curtains, Pinkish Black and True Widow.  There's also a huge garage scene here.  Honestly this isn't my favorite genre, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention really great bands like Oddlot, Street Arabs, Ape Hangers, Lash Outs, Casa Magnetica and Fungi Girls. Surprising to most people there's also a great girl band scene here.  Static Mind, Faded Grace, Bitch Bricks and (not all girls) Diabolical Machines come to mind in this list.  Lastly, I'll be completely typical and plug my band, The Chloes.  I like us probably the best, but I might be a tad biased.

I always get in trouble in Observer discussions and with a lot of the Observer fan base because I use the word "hipster" and reading through the responses below, I see a lot of flavor of the day stuff - that's cool though as it will always be like that. We have a scene here that is getting national attention but not as much local press - but that's OK because regular folks go to the shows and it's not about being cool or wishing we were in Austin, it's about having a good time and playing great music for and with friends: DFW has one of the best heavy southern rock, stoner rock, doom, sludge scenes in the United States hands down (and I don't mean the local heavy metal scene which is great also). For those not in the know, Queens of the Stone Age is about as popular as it gets for that type of music and it all starts out with influence from Black Sabbath and 70s hard rock up through grunge. It's about the groove, the tone, the volume and most of all - the riff. We are inspired by Sleep, Kyuss, Down, Clutch, Eyehategod, and the likes. But there is a huge audience for it here and most of the shows have good if not massive turnouts at venues like The Boiler Room, Reno's Chop Shop, The Rail Club, and even Lola's and The Double Wide host some of these great shows. Bands that are leading the scene include: Wo Fat (Small Stone Records), Mothership (Ripple Music), Orthodox Fuzz, The Cosmic Trigger, Hellgoat, Southern Train Gypsy, Pinkish Black, Big Sandy Gilmer, FTW, Stone Machine Electric, Four Days to Burn, Hawk vs Dove, Vorvon, and on and on and on. Next, I'll throw in a mention of a few of the best punk bands in the area: China Kills Girls are just fantastic and the Swinging Dicks are superb. Other bands worth note: The House Harkonen, Protest for some great metal, Rivethead for the best industrial hard rock, and for country/country rock - can't go wrong with Saints Eleven. Venues: I personally like Trees, The Boiler Room, The Double Wide for Dallas. For Fort Worth, The Rail Club, Lola's, and The Grotto.

Welcome to the area! It's getting to be crazy great around these parts. In the shameless self-promotion department, we're a Fort Worth indie rock/power pop outfit, and we're playing our first Dallas gig this Saturday at the previously mentioned AllGood Cafe, which is indeed a very cool spot. 8:00 PM. But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention all the kick-ass other bands who are our pals - you should get acquainted with The Chloes, Year of the Bear, Mailman, Bitch Bricks, The Breakfast Machine, Lindby...

Welcome to DFW!

I will admit I'm a little biased being a Fort Worth resident, but we've got a great local scene over here.

My favorite FW venues are Lola's, The Where House, Basement Bar, and The Grotto.  Dallas venues, I like the Palladium, Double Wide, and Granada.

I don't know much about Dallas' local scene, but the bands I've heard have not impressed me.  The only one I really dug was Another Brick in the Wall, a stellar Pink Floyd tribute band.  Seems like a lot of Dallas bands play either butt rock or butt rock covers.  Not a fan.

Fort Worth has a slew of killer local bands, including but not limited to: Siberian Traps, Madras, Secret Ghost Champion, Igneous Grimm, Quaker City Nighthawks, The Hanna Barbarians, The Williams, Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Spiderfriends, My Wooden Leg, Pinkish Black, Telegraph Canyon, Josh Weathers + The True Endeavors, Luke Wade and No Civilian, Patriot, The Longshots, Fungi Girls, Skeleton Coast, Doom Ghost, War Party, Bitch Bricks, Year of the Bear, Mailman, Dazey Chain, Big Mike's Box O' Rock, and the list goes on and on.

I think you will come to find Fort Worth's local scene is truly the place to be.  Previous observer music editors have even written that they like FW's local bands/scene better than Dallas'.  Hopefully this list will help!

Opening Bell!!!, Sofar Sounds: Dallas/Fort Worth shows are amazing too, Kessler. I see Camille Cortinas Neal in the comments but you need to go hear her live, also John Lefler. In fact, I'd just recommed that you block off March 23rd now for a special 10th Anniversary Show at Opening Bell. Welcome to Big D!!
