We've started poking around in locals' iTunes, iPods, Spotify playlists, CD players, cassette decks, turntables and brains with one question in mind: What are you listening to? We don't even care if it's good, we just want to know what the music community has been obsessing over, playing on repeat, picking apart, hating or turning people on to. Sometimes, these things even all happen at once.
After months of planning and fundraising, the Girls Rock Dallas summer camp finally got underway yesterday, and culminates this Saturday, July 28, at Dada, with their end-of-session showcase. If you've never been to one of these, bring some tissues. It's a life-changing experience.
Executive Director Rachel Michaud shared with us the band that's been propelling her along recently.
"I've been listening to The Spazzys Aloha! Go Bananas for almost a year straight. It is definitely my go-to album when I want to listen to something, but can't decide what. This album is just so peppy and fun, it makes me want to dance every time I turn it on. It's very Ramones-like, simple three-chord punk rock by an all-female band. I play it around the apartment when I'm trying to clean and it definitely helps me forget that I'm actually doing chores."
