Man, I Used To Really Love Coldplay

Years ago, something disturbing was taped up on the walls of my friend's dorm room at SMU. Printed on plain, white paper were the lyrics from "A Rush of Blood to the Head" by Coldplay. He'd even increased the font size, bolded some words, and put them on multiple pages to make them stand out against the stale walls of SMU's Mary Hay Dorm.

Wait, hang on.

It wasn't my friend. It was me.

I'm the one who had the lyrics to "A Rush of Blood to the Head" taped up on my dorm room walls. And it wasn't an accident. I didn't accidentally, like, "oh, shit" copy and paste the wrong song, re-size and bold the verses, print them to multiple sheets of paper and place them in a meaningful array over my dorm walls.

I just really loved Coldplay. I loved Parachutes. I loved the drifty, boozy darkness of "High Speed." I loved "Shiver." And I loved A Rush of Blood to the Head, the sprawling darkness of "Warning Sign," the war-infused lyrics of the title track. (Plus, there was the show at Nokia Theater in 2002, during the Rush of Blood tour, where I sat next to these girls who I thought about asking out, and then didn't. Turned out to be the band Eisley, who was also opening.)

I'm not saying all this because I'm not supposed to like Coldplay for some bullshit reason. I'm saying it now because of a new ironclad truth: Coldplay really, really blows. Hard. On the Star Wars scale of terrible, the last three albums each hit Phantom Menace. Following the morose stuff on Rush of Blood and Parachutes, there were notable moments of complete ass suckery, like:

1. The CW-ready melodrama of X&Y's "Swallowed in the Sea":

Actual lyric: "And I could write a song a hundred miles long / Well that's where I belong / Well you belong with me"

2. The annoying, U2 intensity of "Cemeteries of London" off Viva La Vida:

Actual lyric: "At night they would go walking to the breaking of the day / The morning is for sleeping"

3. And the meandering headache of Mylo Xyloto:

Actual song title: "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall"

There is something low about this kind of musical change. Something depressing, like a part of you has been poured out on the sidewalk. It's the feeling of moving on from the music tastes of your youth. Sometimes, you can see it coming: a sudden numbness during a song that used to prickle your senses. It's the reason all of those Dave Matthews live bootlegs are in the trash. Sometimes you're just blindsided because Hey,That Artist You Used to Love Suddenly, Inexorably Blows.

Has Coldplay always sucked? I don't know. What do you think? I can't separate myself from it. I grew up with them, so part of this is sentimental. Thing is, I'll always check in to hear their new stuff. Just to see if they still suck.

Coldplay plays June 22 and June 23 at American Airlines Center.

I made the mistake of saying almost this very thing: "I used to love Coldplay but now they are a royal beating," I said to a guy who brought up the topic Saturday afternoon at a bar in Victory Park. Turns out he was a huge fan looking for a scalper and he nearly chewed my face off. So I'm not surprised you are getting the enraged comments I guess. We live in a world where Fox News and Storage Wars top the ratings, so ...

I agree mostly with your sentiments.  Rush of Blood set the bar high for this band.  I wore that CD out.  X & Y (in my opinion) approached the bar, but did not quite reach to that level.  Everything else since then has severely fallen way short.  It's like they're another band, trying to blend in with the rest of the forgettable pop artists of today instead of stand apart from them. I can still play Rush of Blood (and to a lesser extent X & Y) and get some enjoyment out of them today.  But, I can't say that I've played Viva la Vida or Mylo Xyloto more than 10 times since they were released. That being said, I anticipate the release of their next album to see if it sucks, just as you said.

Just because you're a lame douchebag of a writer, please don't tack your boorish, arrogant bs on the rest of the reading public.  I was in attendance last night at AAC and can honestly say, that Coldplay, though not by any stretch of the imagination my favorite band, gave the best show I've ever seen.  Ever. Not only the incredible hi tech special effects, which so many bands don't give a shit to do, but the energy, connectedness and genuine care for their fans, sets them way WAY above the vast majority of rock bands out there.  Ummm have you even paid attention to the shit being put out their by Beiber, Lovato and the like these days ?  Get real.

Their new album isn't particularly my favorite but don't you think it's pretty narrow-minded to dismiss Coldplay as a band completely? It's the whole journey of being a musician, change is always going to be an integral part of it. If it isn't, a musician wouldn't be growing and considering this article, it seems that your taste in music hasn't either...

You know, after reading this article and thinking about it, they're not that bad...

It's not Coldplay, it's you. You are trying to live in the past, something that Coldplay, or any band, can't afford to do if they are going to stand the test of time. They are actually the same group of four extremely, amazingly talented individuals. They still have the same drive and love of music. They love and appreciate their fans more than any group I've ever witnessed, and I've witnessed a lot. They give 100% to everything they do. Have you been to a concert lately? If not, you need to go. Don't walk, run. I urge you. They, above anyone I can think of, don't deserve this crap that you wrote.

Coldplay make good music. Just cuz you dont like them doesnt mean they suck. Bands change. If they kept making the same album over and over again they would suck to you then too. You write some crappy blog you don't make music so who are you to say what sucks. Everyone on the internet thinks what they think matters enough to start  a blog.
