The DC9 At Night/Good Records Challenge #2: The Mohicans
Aaaand we are back with the second DC9 At Night/Good Records Challenge. Once again, we're making a sport out of shopping for art, finding any excuse we can to create our own version of Supermarket Sweep. For those who don't remember the rules, we give our favorite artists and Dallas personalities $50 and five minutes to show us what they would buy. Then, we give it to you, because you are so needy.
Daniel Rodrigue The Mohicans on the Good Records couch, talking out their picks
At the starting line today, we find the Mohicans, a North Texas hip-hop duo performing tomorrow at Homegrown Fest. Texas Tech students Devin Calvin (Kashus Klay) and Dave Morgan (Dave) won our hearts and hips with single "Fa Shiggadow" and their first release, Uncas, proved they're ones to watch in the increasingly buzzed about Dallas hip-hop scene.
I was thrilled to find out this was the 'hicans first visit to Good Records, so we couldn't let them go in totally blind. I gave them a quick overview of the store before starting the countdown. After inquiring about their strategy, Calvin responded, "Well, usually I would take my time, but in five minutes I will probably judge the art work." My kind of quick thinking! That is how I buy wine, also. Thanks to Catherine Downes and Daniel Rodrigue for shooting, and Downes for editing. Check out the Mohicans' moves below.
Jacob, beloved Good Records soothsayer, gave the Mohicans' picks a very enthusiastic thumbs up: "This is so random it works, especially the Sun Ra. That is a surprising choice."
Good Records challenge confession: The Mohicans totally schooled us on the Sun Ra tip. I was familiar with the artist, but NOT the 1972 film Space is the Place. I spent the evening searching YouTube and I suggest you do the same.
You guys know the drill. E-mail us here for your chance to win the loot -- Michael Jackson's Dangerous, Sun Ra's Space is the Place, St. Vincent's Stranger Mercy and the latest issue of Spin with cover boy Waka Flocka Flame -- plus a pair of tickets to next Friday's Best Coast show at the Granada. And then make your way out to Homegrown Fest tomorrow, and catch them on the Shiner Stage at 2:30 p.m. You won't regret it.
