Not better than: Seeing Motörhead on this bill.

So, if a ticket for a hot co-headlining tour with two legendary metal acts costs $50, wouldn't it make sense for the price to be lowered if one of those bands couldn't play?

Silly me, this is unrestrained capitalism we are talking about. Fifty bucks is $50, with or without Motörhead. The handwritten signs on the ticket windows at the venue informed the unwashed masses that, due to illness, Motörhead was a no-show.

No problem, just increase the time the other three bands get to play and we'll call it even. But it wasn't a fair trade, not by a long shot.

And I wasn't the only one to think so. In every part of the venue, I encountered people who had purchased a ticket in order to have their eardrums pummeled by classic Motörhead fare such as "Ace of Spades" and "Killed by Death." Even the poor crew at the merchandise table bemoaned the fact that they were told to take down and not sell any Motörhead paraphernalia.

But, as P.T. Barnum famously said, the show must go on. And since several hundred area metalheads gathered together, on a school night no less, the evening was ripe with odd possibilities.

The assembled brood was treated to several hours of classic noise, music made for air guitar nirvana. Watching the crowd was more fun than watching the players on stage: It was (mostly) guys in their 40s remembering when this music made them hate their own parents.

Many of these folks were there to see Megadeth -- Dave Mustaine and the rest of his beautifully coiffed four-piece did not disappoint. They blasted through the expected fare like "Hanger 18" and "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" I got the feeling the crowd would have showered Megadeth with adulation even if the band played a set of songs by the Monkees in some sort of metallic tribute to Davy Jones.

In the end, it was a perfunctory performance for all involved. The bands did their part and the audience responded. Walking away, I felt the same as if I had gone to work and done a fairly decent job.

And I still missed Lemmy.

Personal bias: I love me some Motörhead and I was in a fairly shitty mood the entire evening knowing that I would not get to see one of my all-time favorite bands.

Random note: Some super dad brought his eight-year-old son to the show and that kid did some major headbanging. I could envision him visiting the school nurse today, complaining of neck pain.

I agree that the sound was not in good quality as you would expect.

I like how Palladium Ballroom didn't see fit to post something on Facebook about Motorhead's cancellation. Yes, there were posts made by people not associated with the venue but who's to say it wasn't a bunch of pranksters trying to get people to head to Trees for the better (in my not so humble opinion) rock show.

Motorhead is scheduled to be at Starplex on July 10 as part of Mayhem Festival. SLAYER, Anthrax and High On Fire are among the other acts on the bill.

This show was really a disappointment.  I don't have to say how bad it was that Motörhead was a no-show, but it f*cking sucked. Volbeat was a surprise for me, those Danes can rock.  Megadeth's sound was so jacked up, I think Dave would be ashamed if he could have heard what was heard out in the crowd.  The closer to the stage I got, the worse it got.  I was about four feet from the railing at one point and could not hear anything.  I guess those Marshalls are just for show, because I had to go out on the edge to hear the music.  Dave's mic only worked about half the time, cutting in and out during songs.  Sad, sad, sad.

***ON A FINAL NOTE - YOU JAG-OFFS BRINGING SMALL CHILDREN TO SHOWS LIKE THIS SHOULD BE REPORTED TO CPS.  THE FACT THAT IT'S AN ALL-AGES SHOW DOES NOT MEAN IT'S FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT.  DO YOU LIKE EXPOSING YOUR KID TO EAR-DAMAGING SOUND AND POT SMOKE?  IF YOU WANT TO SHARE YOUR MUSIC WITH YOUR KID, DO IT AT HOME.  IT'S A DRAG FOR EVERYONE TO HAVE RESTRAIN THEMSELVES OUT OF WORRY ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF TRAMPLING A SIX-YEAR OLD.  FIND A BABYSITTER NEXT TIME. AS A PARENT MYSELF, I WOULD NEVER, EVER BE SO IRRESPONSIBLE.***

Spot on revue.  I arrived to see Volbeat doing an extended set, and the lead singer announced that MOTORHEAD was not going to play due to illness.  I was so bummed.  It ruined my entire evening.  I understand illness can happen, but whenever I went to the boxoffice and asked for a concession (a price break or tickets to an upcoming show?), I was told NO DICE!  That just sucks, and as I have already said, ruined my night.I did like Volbeat, and to their credit, they play their hearts out.....and it ROCKED!But I was NOT their to see Volbeat, I paid my hard earned cash to see MOTORHEAD!

I actually left half way through MEGADETH's set.  The sound at the Palladium is awefull, Dave's mic wasn't set up properly, and the smoke absolutely killed me.

I saw Devo at the Palladium, but this will be my last show at the Palladium.  The venue is trashed, the sound sucks, and they refused to give any concession (a price break or tickets to an upcoming show) when the co-headliner (MOTORHEAD) couldn't play due to illness.

Sidenote:  Anybody listened to the new Van Halen album?  This bitch R O C K S  H A R D !!

The $50 was already out of my hand when I saw the "no Motorhead" sign. It was already gone so I figured ok. Ive missed them the last two times they were in Dallas. Maybe Megadeth will step up. They didnt. Mediocre set list, WAY to freaking hot, and so much marijuana smoke in the air I fear my next drug test for work. Prob never go to this venue again.

The problem is that 'Gigantour' is really a misnomer at this point.  They need more bands, period, if they're gonna charge that much.

I had feeling this would happen. Motorhead's website did not show the Dallas and Austin dates unitil Monday, and still don't have tonight's Houston date. $60 is steep enough to see four bands, of which I only really wanted to see two of. Better luck next time. Its hell getting old when you don't take care of yourself Lemmy.Gimme some MOTORHEAD \m/

Volbeat is a great band, but not for 50 bucks. I just hope Motorhead books a headlining tour to make up for the missed shows.

yep. spot on.   I waltzed up to the window to see the "Motorhead is out due to Illness" sign.   I really, really, wanted to check the Motorhead box off. So, I jumped a cab and headed to trees check out the Casualties.   Now, that was civilized.  Screw you, Lemmy.  I'm getting too old!

What precisely are you responding to?

My criticism of the quality of the sound?  The sound was TERRIBLE!  It completely ruined Megadeth's set.  I spent half the show in the pit or center stage about four feet from the railing until I couldn't take the lack of volume or sound quality there.  Also, I'm a bit old and out of shape, so I went to the outer edge, stage right.  The sound was better, but like I said, Dave's mic only worked about half the time.  If you don't go to hear the music what are you there for?

My opinion that children who are not old enough or big enough to ride the teacups at Disneyland should not be at a show like this?  I shouldn't have to even explain this.  I am a parent and I wouldn't bring my son to a show like this, ever.

Clingon, you must be a shill for the Palladium, which means you are the lowest form of life.  If you were stuck on the bottom of my shoe, I'd just throw the shoe away, rather than try to clean you off.  If not, you are probably one of those Limp Bizket-loving frat boys who love to spend their time date-raping women and sodomizing each other.

I love the dated "try living in russia" reference. why not cite the domino theory of communism in asia while you are at it?
