Wild Moccasins
This Saturday at the Granada Theater, one of the best Texas oddball pop shows of the year takes place, featuring Austin's The Octopus Project, Houston's Wild Moccasins and locals Mystery Skulls.

Recent New West Records signees Wild Moccasins are nearing the re-release of their shimmering, catchy-as-all-get-out LP, Skin Collision Past. And, given the strength of the record, there isn't any reason to think that this quintet, featuring the she/he vocals of Zahira Gutierrez and Cody Swann, won't be tapping into the subconscious of the great 48 in the very near future.

With the gig Saturday night, we thought it would be a great time to catch up with Gutierrez and find out what album she would keep with her should she ever be stranded, and armed with only a contraption that might spin a few tunes for her.

If given only one disc to be stranded on a desert island with, which one would it be?
I've always found these questions to be odd. I mean, if I'm stranded on a desert island I would probably have gone so mad that having just one album would just make me go crazier. If I had to pick an album to lose my mind to, I'd pick Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys.

Why that specific album?
It's not necessarily one of those albums that's a phase for me. I believe I'll always love it and perhaps hear a new part every time I put it on. Some of the songs are beautiful, some sad, and some aggressive.

What's your favorite song(s) on the record?
"I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" is a perfect song. I just easily relate to the lyrics; they are so simple. It's just one of those songs where you don't have to say much or make it complicated, you just know.

When did you first here the record?
I remember hearing "God Only Knows" on the credits to a movie and thinking, "I need to hear that song again!" For some reason, the song made me feel so emotional, unlike any song had made me feel at the time. Maybe it was just because I was 14 and an unstable teenager, but I'm just going to say the song had a great impact on me!

What does picking that record say about you?
That if I was stranded on this island for eternity, I want to listen to lyrics that will remind me of how I was feeling before I got there, happy or sad.
