Erykah Badu Banned From Malaysia?

Categories: DFW Music News

A special Leap Day concert Erykah Badu was scheduled to perform in Kuala Lampur tomorrow was temporarily canceled, after a local paper ran this promo photo of her, which shows one of her (temporary) tattoos spelling out the Arabic word for "Allah."

It apparently violated the Central Agency for the Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes' long-standing policies, and had "failed to meet Malaysian cultural values standards."

"I deserve it," Badu wrote on her Twitter yesterday. However, a look at this Facebook event page makes it seem like the show will go on.

Here's a video message she recorded a few days ago, in which she speaks to her Malaysian fans. Hopefully she smoothed things over and will get to perform this somewhat historic show. Stay tuned for comment from the Badu.

Didn't she get the memo?  Offending Christians is cool and edgy, and carries a low risk of physical retribution, but offending Muslims often leads to riots, death threats, etc.  I don't remember her rushing to apologize when people were offended by her topless video shoot.  Try the same thing in an Islamic country, and she'd be the next Salman Rushdie.

I think it is nothing cool to offend any figure or symbol which belongs to any religion intentionally or not. We take it as an offense when someone abuses our sisters or mothers. Now we are talking about hurting the feelings of hundreds of millions of people, Christians or Muslims it doesn't matter. On the other hand I agree riots and death threats are not acceptable ways of response.

Freedom of speech doesn't only mean "freedom to say anything that doesn't hurt anyone's feelings," does it?  Because if it does, you can shut anyone up about pretty much anything by saying they're offending you or hurting your feelings.

Remember, Badu didn't say or do anything that was even close to being critical of Islam.  She accidentally (?) violated the Islamic rule that you can't use Allah's name for any decorative purpose.  This is like when a brand of ice cream was banned in the UK, because the swirl logo looked somewhat like "Allah" in Arabic script (Google Allah ice cream).  Do we really want to encourage and cater to that degree of hypersensitivity to being "offended?"

Good or bad, if you want to play in their sandbox, you have to follow their rules.

that's why we don;t want to go the christian extremist route and end up just like hardcore muslim nations. and frankly, I am never offened by topless video shoots. but remember, there is only a tiny difference between the kind of country folks like rick santorum want and leaders like those in Malaysia.

Only a tiny difference?  Are you uninformed about Malaysia, overly paranoid about Santorum, or both?  Google on

Malaysia shariaMalaysia floggingMalaysia homosexuals

You really think that Santorum's dream world is more or less the Christian equivalent of that?  Seriously?
