Culture Club: A Few Thoughts on Madonna's Halftime Performance

Categories: Last Night

If I had to explain Madonna's Super Bowl performance in one word that isn't followed by question marks and exclamation points, it would be synergy. She was in a commercial before the event, and her new song, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" was featured afterwards. OK, fine, the Super Bowl is commerce, and Madonna has a new album coming out.

But props to her for using that budget to go fucking Broadway with it, BECAUSE SHE CAN. The whole Roman soldier-themed show was pulled together by Madge's longtime creative director Jamie King, and it had the slick feel of something orchestrated, literally, from the ground up. Madonna appeared as a sort of alien gladiator queen to the strains of "Vogue," complete with her own army, and though I haven't really been excited about Madonna in a while, I got excited. As a kid growing up in the '80s and '90s, the image of her making out with Jesus in the "Like a Prayer" video is burned in my Catholic-schooled memory much like those (synergy alert!) Vogue magazine covers were burned in the stage.

Then she segued into "Music," with a special appearance by LMFAO. C'mon, people. Why do they get to keep being relevant? (Synergy alert: They are Berry Gordy's son and grandson, and that is apparently why!) I felt like that was the one misstep of the show. Even the dude dancing on that tightrope was more exciting than seeing those two ridiculous Fraggles bobble-heading around the stage. Where is the trap door? Stop making me sad about music, LMFAO.

Her new single from MDNA features Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., who appaeared as cheerleaders on her left and right. Quite appropriate. M.I.A. took that time to give everyone the middle finger. Cool! I guess that was to be ... expected? I mean, the Super Bowl entertainment brain trust knows who she is, right? Still, an awesome trinity of ladies. The only thing that would have made it better is if M.I.A. started waving a gun around.

"Open Your Heart" and "Like a Prayer" with Cee-Lo were OK, but I was really hoping Grace Jones popped out of his sternum, Alien-style.

I noticed after the performance on various social media outlets that (straight) men made fun of her, and women loved it. Sounds about right. That's always been Madonna's divide, but it's nice to know she can still cleave a crowd like that, and throw a middle finger to her haters, who still feel the need to comment on her looks and age even though she's apparently not relevant anymore. Well, commenting on her doesn't make her less relevant.

I thought it was one of the better halftime performances I've seen in the past decade, though I really wanted to see LMFAO shot into space forever, via two cannons attached to Madonna's bra. Maybe on her upcoming tour? Maybe Richard Branson can be involved? Let's make it happen. (Synergy!)

Oh, Mixmaster has a few more thoughts on the ads and non-football highlights here.

I'd say Madge should settle down and fuck touring; either do a Vegas act or stay in New York, rent a theater and do a long running Broadway review of her repertoire. It'd outlast CATS.

What do you get when Madonna does a handstand? A brunette with bad breath.....

First off, the NFL fan base would have not wanted to see Madonna "perform" at Superbowl given, most fans are male 15-65 or whatever. There's nothing wrong with Madonna lip synching at her own shows, but most NFL fans want to see a rock band play live- even if there are a few mistakes- the performance should not sound just as it does in the studio.True, the NFL fan base, "straight men", I guess you call it, will rag on Madonna because men don't care about Cleopatra and the Romans. Plug in your fucking guitar and don't lip synch. That's embarrassing!

I like Madonna's work "Ray of Light" and beyond as many of her producers have found a way to manipulate her voice and make her sound above average. But fact is fact, she lacks talent live(vocally), and that may be why she did not power up her microphone this past Sunday

The author also asks why is LMFAO still around? Probably because of characters like Madonna who started  promoting bits back in the 1980's. the only difference Madonna is still around and should be applauded for being a master promoter. Nicki Manaj, Lady Ga Ga, Britney Spears all taught by the Godmother of Spectacle- Madonna.

U2, The Who, and Prince earn honorable mention as the best Superbowl halftime LIVE performances. Madonna's exhibition this past Sunday was an excellent tutorial on how to film a music video in a domed stadium.

Lip Sync Much?
Lip Sync Much?

She didn't sing a single bit while on the stage, as it was all lip synced. There is nothing musical about that. Sure it was an entertaining visual, but there was no singing done for the entire half-time show. Kelly Clarkson at least sung and did it right. Terrible performance musically, but visually pleasing.

Boring show, and without the props and goofy dancers, she's still light on the talent but really strong on the self-promotion.

What do the complainers want??   Don't you understand that the halftime show is about generating viewiership OUTSIDE of the football audience?  Do you want some fuckin' obscure band that only you like, so it has "cred?" Seriously, name some bands that fit the demographic/ratings bill that will still draw the numbers she drew.

Why are you so derogatory towards Fraggles?

She ripped off Kylie Minogue with the Romans bringing here out. Kylie used that in her last your. Very unoriginal.

I'm not a big Madonna fan (the Ray of Light cd was pretty awesome though) , but she calls to attention how Americans see through blinders.  I lived overseas for three years and although Madonna is considered by many no longer relevant in the states, she's still HUGE in most of the world.

No, she took revenge on Kylie, who is almost as massive as Madonna outside the USA.  Nobody upstages Madonna, not Kylie, not Gaga, not God.  M.I.A. better be glad she's got a billion dollar anchor baby for generating all the press after the show.  I will bet you that she's *not* going to be opening for Madge on the upcoming tour.  Maybe having Minaj and M.I.A. on stage together was their final test -- lipsynch for your life to be my opening act on my upcoming tour.

So Kylie didn't rip it off from every other show that has used that theme/style before her?  lol
