DOMAXXIII: Announcing Your 2011 Dallas Observer Music Awards Winners...

Stephen Masker
Erykah Badu headlined last night's DOMAXXIII. More photos in our slideshow: Scenes from the 2011 Music Awards
Another year, another Dallas Observer Music Awards season down the drain.

Gotta say, though, this year's season felt especially epic. Many thanks to the Toadies, the Old 97's, Erykah Badu, Centro-matic, The Cannabinoids, Sarah Jaffe, A.Dd+, Burning Hotels and RTB2 for their highlighted roles in this year's festivities. Thanks, as well, to the 50 or so other bands that played this past weekend's showcase.

A special thanks to the local music fans, too. Y'all showed up in big numbers both at the Showcase and at last night's Awards Ceremony, where we announced our winners. I speak on behalf of all the participating bands when I thank you for making the scene feel special again.

One more special thanks: Jennifer Robinson, our marketing director, busts her tail every year to make this event happen, and each year, she outdoes herself. This year was no different.

Now, onto the reason you're here. After the jump, check out this year's reader-voted winners and their fellow nominees, posted in descending order representing where each act placed in every category.

Congrats to our winners and to everyone else.

The Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcase began on the main stage with The Toadies, and took to the streets in Deep Ellum in the late hours

Sarah Jaffe's riding a tidal wave of local popularity.  So... has she learned how to smile yet?  Every picture I've seen of her has this "Oh god, I'm about to die" expression on her face.  Get over it, Sarah.  You're the current big thing.  Smile.

The Granada is by far a better live music venue than HOB, and supports the Dallas music scene.  It's a shame that the DOMA went the way of corporate chain venue instead.

I think ANY of the other "Best Music Venue" nominees were more qualified to win than HOB.

And no one cares to question the fact that Granada won best talent buyer? REALLY?

Why all the bitching? Red 100s got best blues act and it is truly deserved.

you're stale
you're stale

damn. i guess jeff cloud has deep pockets...

Love Seryn, love Spune. Love Sara Jaffe. I can't see how House of Blues is best music venue. I don't know any live music fans that think that. My go to place is the Kessler. It tends to feature acts I like and I love Jeff Liles. But I love Sons of Herman and Granada as well. Both are great places to hear music.

Ishi? Really? Ohhhhh that's right. It's a Spune band. With a Spune member. No wonder. And vote-in awards? that automatically discredits the entire event. HOB winning best venue and Ishi winning ANYTHING should prove that... Disgraceful.

Seryn is an incredible group, but I really had my fingers crossed for "Knife Fight" by Calhoun taking best song. That damn song has been stuck in my head since I first heard it.

Money cannot buy you happiness but it can get you a DOMA

gotta say it... please don't have this showcase at the house of blues next year. musicians generally do not want to spend $8-$12 on a drink, and have to deal w/ a staff who are in no way attuned to the dallas music scene. after checking with the observer staff, they gave me a wristband and i walked into the VIP lounge. didn't get a "ticket" or a stubb or anything... from that point on, any time i moved, someone would tell me that i needed to have a ticket stubb, or i needed a "VIP" wristband (or ticket) or i would not be able to go anywhere.... it was super frustrating to have to explain my situation to somebody every time i walked anywhere at all (and then to be forced into general admission because that was the only ticket stub someone would give me... why do i need a ticket stub to get into the GA section of a show that was free?). maybe i'm the only one who dealt w/ this, but i'd much rather be able to mingle and relax w/o constantly having to worry about whether or not i have a ticket stub, or the right kind of ticket for the area i'd like to hang out in. anyway, i know you guys busted ass to do all this, so don't think i'm unapreciative.

How a local blues artist like Lance Lopez can have an international following, but not even get nominated in his own back yard is just beyond me....

Madison King was totally robbed.

I guess I just don't get Seryn. I've never been a big fan of theirs, but apparently I'm missing something.

A little shocked to see HoB voted best venue. I'd take the Kessler or the Granada over that over-priced chain-store any day.

Nice to see Burning Hotels get their category. Really like those boys!

Well, you can't make everyone happy. Overall, great work by the Observer-ers. The Showcase on Sat was frickin' GREAT, and you've got people talking today. Well done!

Hobs for best venue Hm?

The Observer staff were fabulous, great hosts, great people.  We love you.

The House of Blues staff were really mean-spirited and rude.

Just saying...

And voteforme with the 1st jack-ass posting of the day - enjoy your couch and hiding behind your screen; loser.

So, am I wrong or has Sarah Jaffe won every award she's been nominated for...ever?

I think she's on a three year sweep, right?

bahahahaha. what a steamer.

vote-in awards are always good for a laugh.

seriously. vote-in awards.

Will Dowdy

yeah, and i forgot to tell the story of a friend who was in the bathroom, using the toilet, when the hand towel guy came up to the door of the toilet and started peeking in at him. i suppose to make sure he wasn't doing drugs or something... but he wasn't. he was pooping. that shit (pun intended) is just wrong, and no venue that treats their customers like that should win best venue... and i think the fact that they are a chain should disqualify them from any nomination in the first place. the awards were fine, the bands did great, but that venue is absolute garbage. i expect that the 'best venue in dallas" would treat their customers with some amount of respect (especially knowing that a good portion of them are local musicians trying to celebrate and enjoy their nominations) instead of pretty much spending the whole time treating them like criminals. seriously, FUCK THAT PLACE. like entering into a police state.

From all those Map EPs VB put out and all Starflyer 59 hits he wrote?

Ishi is not on the Spune roster.

ishi puts on an amazing performance. What's your beef?

Seeing as how Ishi is not a Spune band, you might want to change your name to IgnorantDallasMusicLover.

Spune is just another giant corporation that's gonna take tour guns and raise your taxes. I heard that Sir William Spune himself kicked a baby in Somalia once so he could join a cult of witch hunting panda bear enthusiasts.

Serious I heard that too.

The Red 100's are extra broke and have no money & we still won a Blues Act baby! & you wanna know why? Because there's people out there who like our music & support us & I feel great

Its the 'friggin Jaffe awards. This 'award' show is just a revenue stream for the Observer.

Agreed. & and for you who are bitching of Seryn, maybe give a listen. All was well deserved.

Seryn is excellent, but I don't know that they're for everyone. I'm glad to see them doing well, though.

Totally agreed on HOB - ridiculous ticket prices, drink prices are worse.

And vote-in awards are pretty silly, but whatcha gonna do? Let Pete Freedman make all of those decisions? #pleaseno

House of Boos
House of Boos

Fuck HOB. HOB is only a step above Nokia/Verizon...which is at the bottom of my list.

Michael Briggs

Of course. The host venue always wins Best Venue. Same thing happened with Granada and Gypsy Tea Room every year.

you're stale

if that's what it takes to get the truth out...

ah mr. saying... interesting last name. german?
