One Dead, Dozens Hospitalized at 2011 Electric Daisy Carnival in Dallas. (Updated With Statement From Promoter.)

This was the scene last last night at Electric Daisy. More photos in the slideshow.
By 1 a.m. this morning, at least one attendee at Saturday night's Electric Daisy Carnival in Fair Park had been declared dead. At least another two dozen had been hospitalized.

After a first year in Dallas that had been deemed a "phenomenal event" by city officials, the second Dallas installment of the Los Angeles-based Insomniac Events-presented Electric Daisy Carnival was fraught with mishap.

"They're dropping like flies," said one fire-rescue officer of the attendees at the 2011 Dallas-based Electric Daisy Carnival shortly after midnight, as four of his department's trucks sat backed up in Baylor Hospital's emergency room drop-off area.

Earlier in the night, paramedics had been instructed to start dropping off those in need of emergency care at other hospitals around the city for fear of overwhelming the Baylor staff. Meanwhile, less than two miles away, just outside the Automotive Buillding in Fair Park, fire-rescue and emergency medical services officers had set up on-site command posts at the festival.

"It's been pretty chaotic," said Dallas Fire-Rescue Lieutenant Samuel L. Friar, immediately after members of his unit had loaded a hand-cuffed event attendee into a truck bound for a hospital. "It's kids getting sick."

And, to that point, that's all.

"The police have been pretty good about keeping the crowds under control," Friar said.

edc2011dallasphone.jpg
Thousands partied without incident on Saturday night.
Moments later, in the medical command post, Dr. Paul E. Pepe, Director of Dallas Emergency Medical Services, took account of his own staff's scene. The number of medical personnel needed on-site, he noted, ended up being twice what the festival had initially requested.

His paramedics had been dealing mostly, he said, with hydration and alcohol consumption concerns -- maybe drugs, too. On-hand materials made such suspicions impossible to confirm. His main concern, he said more than once, was the amount of resources being used -- far more than his department had expected. Last year's inaugural event drew 11,000 attendees. Most early estimates place this year's figures above last year's.

"We've already been talking to the promoters about making sure we're better prepared next year," Pepe said.

If there is a next year, that is: The deceased, according to The Dallas Morning News, was a 15-year-old; promotional materials for the Electric Daisy Carnival, which for the second year in a row took place on city-managed property in Fair Park, express that the event is for those 18 years old and older.

Update at 8:30 p.m.: WFAA now reports that the deceased was 19-year-old Andrew Graf of Argyle.

This news comes shortly after Los Angeles officials "postponed" the festival's return to its initial home after a 15-year-old died of an Ecstacy overdose at last year's Los Angeles event.

Nonetheless, as last night's Dallas show seemed headed for its end, Pepe seemed pleased with his department's handling of the event.

"We do this all the time," he said. "This is like a three-car pileup or something. We just usually don't have this much color."

The color to which he referred was evident everywhere on the grounds of the event -- neon wherever plausible, flesh wherever possible, glowsticks wherever practical -- as the majority of festival attendees enjoyed sets from the likes of electronic music icons Paul Van Dyk, Diplo, Skrillex and others.

Perhaps they enjoyed those sets too much. After a fire alarm had been pulled during his festival-closing indoor set, fire marshals forced Skrillex to cut short his showcase. By 1:40 a.m. officers were herding attendees away from the festival grounds despite the posted event end time of two o'clock.

"It was crazy," said festival performer Diplo, who, unlike Skrillex, was able to complete his entire set before the festival saw its early end. "There were just too many kids on stage."

And, to hear the first responders tell it, maybe just too many kids, period.

"We had an idea that this might happen," said fire-rescue Lieutenant Friar. "We were ready for it."

Update at 8:15 a.m.:
Insomniac CEO and founder Pasquale Rotella has released the following statement about last night's death:
"Our condolences and deepest sympathy go out to the family and friends of the man who passed away tonight. To go from a moment of happiness and enjoyment, to the loss of life, is very heartbreaking. We would like to ask everyone to keep the concertgoer and his family in their thoughts and prayers. Along with the independent local promoters in Dallas, we will work with the authorities to understand how this tragedy occurred."
Update 4:12 p.m. June 12: The city has released attendance figures and a timeline of events from EDC Dallas. The City has also slapped Insomniac Events, EDC's promoters, with seven citations.

Update June 22: Sister paper LA Weekly has details on new ecstasy-related death.

hmmm.... "ecstacy overdose"............................................and where is the toxicology report?????????? sad someone died...but it is more likely they would be dead because of dehydration or existing medical conditions...i have been going to "raves" in the uk for over 21 years and have never seen a death...if ecstacy was that dangerous.....they would be sweeping the dead out of clubs like trash every saturday all over the world........but hey.......they do not!!! stop blaming drugs and start blaming poor education and prohibition............we all know what prohibition causes......GANGSTERS....that is all

I have to be honest. I've raved for 2 years now and from EDC LA to EDC VEGAS Insomniac has stepped up their game. From an extremely packed stadium to a huge Motor speedway. Heavier security, free water refills, first aid on scene patrol, and BATHROOMS. There is just no comperison to last years horror in LA. Vegas knows how to party! And for this i don't mind paying an extra $100 for a plane ticket from LA. Hopefully no one passed away this year and also Skrillex is an awesome producer and i think thats the most important part. Much respect for him and his moment of silence for Ryan Dunn. I have to admit i'll be a little bit depressed for the next year until it all starts again. Everyone was nice. Thanks for the awesome time! <3

Let's say over the past 18 years insomniac has had about 2 million people attend their events, that means every event they have ever hosted. As far as I know there has been 4 people that have ever died AT these events (one last year, one this year, because the driving while intoxicated was not the events fault, and then a couple that were a while ago) so thats a  1:500,000 chance that you die at one of these events. in 2000, the year with the highest record of shark attacks, there were only 79 attacks* total worldwide.  Meanwhile, the International World Games report estimated there are about 20 million recreation surfers worldwide. that makes the chances 1: 253,164.So technically there is more of a chance you could get killed on a surf board. But not everyone surfs. BUT everyone does drive...Chance of dying from a car accident: 1 in 18,585

Here are some other odds.Odds of bowling a 300 game: 11,500 to 1 Odds of getting a hole in one: 5,000 to 1 Odds of getting canonized: 20,000,000 to 1 Odds of being an astronaut: 13,200,000 to 1 Odds of winning an Olympic medal: 662,000 to 1 Odds of an American speaking Cherokee: 15,000 to 1 Odds that a person between the age of 18 and 29 does NOT read a newspaper regularly: 3 to 1 Odds that an American adult does not want to live to age 120 under any circumstances: 3 to 2 Odds of injury from fireworks: 19,556 to 1 Odds of injury from shaving: 6,585 to 1 Odds of injury from using a chain saw: 4,464 to 1 Odds of injury from mowing the lawn: 3,623 to 1 Odds of fatally slipping in bath or shower: 2,232 to 1 Odds of drowning in a bathtub: 685,000 to 1 Odds of being killed on a 5-mile bus trip: 500,000,000 to 1 Odds of being killed sometime in the next year in any sort of transportation accident: 77 to 1 Odds of being killed in any sort of non-transportation accident: 69 to 1 Odds of being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1 Odds of being killed by lightning: 2,320,000 to 1 Odds of being murdered: 18,000 to 1

Why do they say, "Too many KIDS period." This article states and the promoters were clear that it was an 18+ event, are we at the point where we consider 18 year olds kids still?

And by the way the girl in Los Angeles that died was trampled ecstasy was in her system but she was caught in the middle of a large group trying to break through a barrier.

Get you facts straight and stop trying to criminalize partying. If you don't agree these events should take place, then don't attend,go to bible study instead.

the problem is tainted drugs, MDMA in on its own is a very safe drug in normal dosages of about 2.4 mg/lb of body weight. Even in higher dosages death is less than 2% A new study from john hopkins with a large test body shows no long term emotional or "holes in brain" which is outdated and flawed data.

read for yourself.

WOW, I was thinking that the amount hospitalized wasn't too bad compared to how many people attend and then I saw that only 11,000 people went last year?  So how many people went to the Dallas one this year?  That surprised me a little considering usually around 80,000 go to the LA ones and over 100,000 are expected each day of the Vegas one.  So that IS a ridiculous percentage of people to end up in the ER.

Bigtony your an ignorant fool...our friends knew the kid who passed away, he was Apparently on adderall And Molly bought from someone at the event, although he was on drugs, being overheated and not staying hydrateD Are clearly factors. Many of the stands were selling hot waters whe it was in the triple digits, just a bad combination Of dangerous factors.

I was there I know what happend I've been to a few EDC's before. They need to sell water inside and they don't need to promote for this big of event you get a bunch of kids trying drugs for the first time and they don't know how to cool themselfs off. I was right in the middle of Skillex and it was really hot and I know a lot of people got carried out and didn't get help because they were rolling and didn't want to get a ticket exc. But its in the passed now and all they can do is learn from this.

First of all, this could easily be a DC9 comments record.

Truth be told, I forgot this thing was even going on this weekend.  It's not really my scene.  But it sucks whenever people get together for a good time and something negative comes out of it.  I feel terrible for this kid and his family.

Dubstep as a genre should die !!! It's shit !! It's only popular in USA cause Americans don't know real EDM lol the raves of the 90s and 00s was the shit!! . Todays gen sucks!! . I peronally wouldn't wanna make dubstep you can't dance to it it's garbage . I prefer breakbeat . Trance . House . Hardstyle . I would even listen to disco and electro . Dubstep is the lowest form of EDM !!

stop the hate
stop the hate

It saddens me that I try to research what happened to Andrew at the show and all I see are misinformed, hateful, ignorant, close-minded people blasting each other on the internet about something they have no understanding of at all. The most disgusting part is that likely the majority of these people are grown adults who are less educated on the topic than us "stupid kids" who actually experience these things!

I was at EDC. I was rolling. I met some of the greatest people in my life there, saw some incredible performers, had a blast on the carnival rides, got back to my hotel safe, and am now planning on more of these events.

What is it that's in you people to cast judgement on something you literally know NOTHING about? Oh, it was perfectly fine for a lot of you to be drippy hippies or pot heads back in the day, but now that you're older and subsequently holier than thou you know it all without ever taking first-hand experience of our evolving culture to make a judgement.

Let me give you some precious advice that you will likely never consider to appreciate. The government, Fox News, public schools, and the like bold face LIE about the truth behind drugs. We all know that a lot of them are terrible, but that alcohol you drink, cigarettes you smoke, and prescription drugs you take are all deadlier and have more side effects on your body than pure, unadulterated MDMA. When taken properly and using precaution to not overheat or dehydrate, there is a minuscule chance of undesired effects that this handful of people unfortunately faced. You're more likely to die of an unknown peanut allergy than from rolling one night at a spectacular show like EDC.

In my honest opinion I think an overwhelming majority of those who frown upon these "heinous kids and their blasphemous drug use" are internally longing for the chance to experience these little moments of entertainment that make life worth living but can't because of fear coupled with a tunneled vision hindering the possibility for exploring the things us "idiot youth" are going out and doing! For anyone who reads this and is part of such a group, take it from me that it's a hell of a lot of fun in smart moderation, and it's worth trying if you (more likely your kids) know a dealer you can trust. Can't find a way to relate and have fun with your kids? Roll with them! :)

I could go on and on about how ridiculous most of these comments are but, knowing the majority of what the ignorantly stupid will strike back with, I'll take care to use my time wisely on other things. On a final note, I feel I should reiterate that YOU ARE BEING LIED TO! Why do you think the politicians and journalists that commit their careers to slinging mud on people like me are consistently being caught with these "evil" drugs in the hotels of their campaign trails? Because YOU bought their slander!

PLUR.

Wow your intelligent response really got your point through. well.... not really. "extacy" as you call it is slang for MDMA. Do your research and shut the fuck up once you figure out that the likely hood of dying directly due to the chemical is essentially unheard of. Rather, a combination of things are likely what caused this tragedy. There is a huge stigma against raves using scare tactics and myths concerning drug use, open your eyes and stop drinking the kool aid. By the way, there is already talk that the man died because of previous medical conditions, so shut your mouth until you know the real issue.

P.S. - The reason for those being hospitalized were drugs, AND alcohol, AND over-heating. not just "extasy". and considering that out of 20,000+ people and having about 30 of them injured only represents 0.15% of the attendees, that's pretty damn good. probably on par with a country music or metal concert with the same size, if not better.

Yeah, That's right no one died at the concert because of drugs... GIve me a break you IDIOT!  It's always something else that contributed to someone dying, not the drugs, or so an IDIOT like yourself says. NOBODY Including your freaking IDIOT self believes your CRAP!  All kinds of people have died of complications from drugs, and yes it's from the use of DRUGS.  I highlighted the word drugs so you can try and comprehend it's meaning.  You want to take drugs and live like a rock star.  Well you'll die like a rock star too.  So don't give us your full of shit lies of how drugs, ie: EX or any other drug has no effect on your body negatively you freaking IDIOT.  Did I get my point across, for a 5th time!!  IDIOT.
