Poster of the Week: The Walkmen at the Granada Theater on Saturday Night
It may be a little formulaic -- GvB posters pretty much always tend to appropriate old images and their text is almost always used sparingly and starkly -- but it's a a winning formula nonetheless.
This week's poster for the blog-sponsored Walkmen show at the Granada Theater is no different in that regard. The formula, clearly, works.
But this particular poster works especially well, considering the act it's promoting. On their new album, Lisbon, the Walkmen's sound is spare and classic -- something frontman Hamilton Leithauser explained to us in this week's paper. Using an aged image of ballerinas (or is it some sort of '50s sock hop? does it matter?) the image, like the band's sound, recalls an older, simpler time. And the spare text, intentional or not, conjures the silence that is so prevalent on Lisbon -- something our Daniel Hopkins equates to negative space utilized by a visual artist. It's a similar effect -- and this poster grasps as much.
All in all, a strong design from a camp that knows a thing or two about strong design.
Think your poster is better? Want to see one of your designs get honored next week? Drop us an e-mail with an image promoting an upcoming show right here. Oh, and, when possible, be sure to do so at least a week in advance of the show. Thanks!
