My First Show: The Demigs' Guyton Sanders Explains The Thought Process Behind Buying His First Ever Concert Shirt On INXS' Kick Tour

Categories: My First Show
Welcome to My First Show, where we give bands a chance to talk about the first shows they ever attended -- no matter how uncool and embarrassing those tales may be.

The Demigs plan to take off... eventually.

Guyton Sanders is literally a drummer about town. Whether he's playing a church gig with a praise band or with The Demigs, he's almost always in motion.

And he was inspired at at early age. After all, seeing INXS touring on their breakthrough album is definitely a great first show memory. But also seeing My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr. on the same bill? One can hope his hearing was not permanently damaged.

What was the first show you ever saw?
INXS on the Kick tour in Birmingham, Alabama. I even bought one of those shirts that the drummer wore on the album cover. I was a fan of a lot of Jon Farriss's drumming. Plus I thought the shirt looked cool during that time. Not that I wanted to be like him.. But I wanted a shirt from the concert that was a little more abnormal from your typical concert shirt. I'm glad I got to see INXS before the passing of Michael Hutchence. It hasn't been the same since.

Did your parents take you to see INXS?
No. My parents didn't like that type of music really. They were more Beatles, Coltrane, Davis, jazz fans.

Can you remember the first show you saw with your own money?
My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr. at the UAB Arena, also in Birmingham. It's still sonically one of the best shows I've been in the presence of. I'm a huge My Bloody Valentine/Kevin Shields fan. When I first heard the Loveless album... that album never left my car. Most of the time being in the player. When I heard they were on tour with Dinosaur Jr. I was not only determined to see them at UAB arena, but I also decided to drive to the next show, which was in Atlanta. I've been to a lot of amazing shows, but seeing My Bloody Valentine will always be that special first. I went to the My Bloody Valentine show at the Palladium Ballroom last year and it really bought back memories seeing them.

What was your first show with The Demigs like?
The first I played with The Demigs made me a little nervous, but it was really fun.
The venue was Rubber Gloves. There were a decent amount of people there, but it gave me such a rush. Plus I got to finally be able to try out my Ludwig stainless steel kit I had just finished rebuilding. Needless to say, everything was really loud. We were also playing with THe BAcksliders and those guys are always fun on stage. I'm hoping we'll be sharing the stage again with them sooner than this but we have a show with them again on May 13th at Dan's Silverleaf  along with RTB2. Should be a good show.

The Demigs will be one of the many Denton-based bands at 35 Conferette and will be playing an official release party for their new album on Friday, April 1, at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios in Denton.
