Good Records Recordings Plans Fairly Major Philosophical Change For 2011

Yesterday, we spoke with Daniel Huffman, the man behind New Fumes, who landed himself an opening slot for The Flaming Lips and Neon Indian during the Jack Daniel's Kick-off Party at Palladium Ballroom on Thursday, February 3.

While perusing the New Fumes blog, though, we stumbled across a curious statement that Huffman made regarding Good Records Recordings, the label that plans to release his forthcoming limited edition vinyl LP.

"Big things coming from Good Records in 2011," Huffman wrote on his blog. "Mark my words."

So we gave Polyphonic Spree frontman and Good Records Recordings label head Tim DeLaughter a call to see what all the fuss was about. And he seemed even more excited than Huffman.

And dammit if he doesn't have a good reason to be.

"[Good Records Recordings] is basically going to be a singles label," DeLaughter says. "We're clearly driven by the color and texture of vinyl these days."

The idea behind the label's new direction is to prevent the artist from getting bogged down in the throes of creating an entire album. Instead of working on all 10 songs at once, the artist will release individual songs one at a time.

"If they have 10 songs on their record, they'll release 10 singles," DeLaughter says. "And, at the end, you'll have the option to get the 12-inch. The philosophy is that people just don't have enough time to take on a whole album these days, so we are basically creating a collectors community where you can draw a comparison to comic books but we're releasing singles... The idea is to spread it out and to give the artist as much freedom as possible -- to take their time between each song or develop other projects on the side."

One Good Records Recordings artist that can be expected to release new material in the new future, and likely through this new format, is Pilotdrift, who hasn't released an album since 2005.

"[Pilotdrift frontman] Kelly [Carr]'s had a record in the can for a while now with him, but he's kind of going back and forth and tweaking on it," DeLaughter says. "So it's kind of up in the air at this point, but we plan on putting it out."

DeLaughter also hinted at some other big news for the label in the coming months, but says he isn't ready to make a formal announcement, so stay tuned.
