Giveaway: A Pair of Tickets to See Peter Wolf Crier and Retribution Gospel Choir Tonight at Hailey's
Not a bad bill tonight at Hailey's -- something that we haven't really been able to say of late, to be honest -- thanks to a couple of touring, up-and-coming acts out of Minnesota stopping through Denton for the night.
Aside from the whole both being from the Land of a Thousand Lakes tie-in, though, Retribution Gospel Choir and Peter Wolf Crier really don't have all that much in common. The former is a pretty ambitious outfit that combines pop and psychedelic elements into fast-moving jaunts that, somewhat gloriously, and pretty much without fail, come to a satisfying crest -- something frontman Alan Sparhawk more than showcases in his earlier outfit, Low, albeit via much, much slower and less bombastic means. The latter, meanwhile, revels in some interesting, if well-trodden, lo-fi folk territory. Both have some pretty substantial backers, though: Retribution Gospel Choir's 2010 sophomore album, 2, came on Seattle indie juggernaut Sub Pop; Peter Wolf Crier's 2010 debut, Inter-Be, came on Indiana-based indie favorite Jagjaguwar.
If nothing else, their shared appearance tonight should at least provide for a varied night. And, considering the chatter that Sparhawk has a new Low album in the works slated for an April release, this could well be the last Retribution Gospel Choir stop through the region for some time.
