The Problem With... The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)"

The Black Eyed Peas, already on our bad side this week, released a new album called The Beginning on Tuesday. And you know what that means: more sloppy rhymes, more circa-2008 digital voice abuse and more poorly re-appropriated hooks from yesteryear.

Oh, joy.

Imagine that The BEP invited you to a pizza party -- likely the wildest, most bombastic pizza party in the ten dimensions -- and had plenty of good ingredients with which to bake a pizza. But, when it's the Peas' turn, they just carelessly throw all this stuff on the pie, hoping it will turn out good.

"The Time (Dirty Bit)," the foursome's latest single and opening cut on their new album, is what happens when that pizza comes out of the oven looking and tasting like crap.

Let's go over the ingredients that made this pie such a stinker.

First, there's the samples. The chorus covers the end song out of Dirty Dancing, Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes' "(I've Had) The Time of My Life." OK. Now, sampling isn't always bad. You see, when sampling is done correctly, and the artist follows up with a good rhyme or tune, the new sound distinguishes itself from the sampled sound.

Think Kanye and his latest stuff.

In this track, though, it's like the Peas aren't even trying. They just took out some leftover Auto-Tune from the fridge and stuck it on the chorus' lines.

The next ingredient? The beat, once again the same kind of house-electro sound that the Peas played to mediocrity back on The E.N.D. Which, OK, is fine, I guess. Except that it's not OK when Deadmau5 is openly wondering if the Peas are stealing his ideas for their beats..

Technically, each of these ingredients were of good quality.

But they just weren't bought fresh for the party.

So, in turn: Yuck!
