Well, sort of: Per the Facebook post, the venue, which exists below the Abbey Inn restaurant, will now be known as the Abbey Underground and says it's "just reformatting and getting rid of covers."
I think it's fair to say, though, that touring shows at the venue will be no mas. Tomorrow night, meanwhile, will see the venue's last "real show" before the venue changes up its formatting, as it plays host to performances from Fatty Lumpkin, Boxcar Bandits and the hey-we-thought-they-broke-up Foe Destroyer.
Can't say this all too surprising a turn of events, though...
Denton, ever the cyclical scene, appears to be in a serious lull these days, birthing fewer and fewer new bands of note, finding more and more of its musicians moving to Dallas, and seeing more and more touring shows opting to do the same.
Still, this "reformatting" seems quite the shame, considering the venue's largely underappreciated space and sound capabilities.
But there is one silver lining in all this: We'll no longer have to distinguish the differences between the Denton spot and the new Deep Ellum venue of the same name, which recently hosted Kanye protege Rhymefest in its confines.
