Gig Alert: Hypernova and The Yellow Dogs Tonight at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios in Denton

It's not often that a band from Iran makes its way to our area, much less a pair of them, so tonight's Hypernova/The Yellow Dogs performance at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios should provide a good reason to head to Denton.

Now based out of New York, Hypernova has gone through quite a journey just to make it as a functioning unit. Hell, it took intervention by Senator Charles Schumer just to get the band visas for their first U.S. tour back in 2008. Hypernova played SXSW that same year.

Since Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad banned Western music in his country back in 2005, Hypernova had to play secret gigs in basements and could have been subject to public floggings if caught. Wow, even a gig in Tulsa would look good after that.

Anyhow, Hypernova's full-length debut, Through the Chaos, hit the streets this past April and the band's interesting take on post-punk should thrill fans of Sisters of Mercy and Nine Inch Nails. Certainly, there are worse bands for Iranians to emulate.

Like Hypernova, The Yellow Dogs left Iran for the (relatively) safer confines of Brooklyn and bring a distinct new-wave/indie vibe to tonight's proceedings.
