Gig Alert: Saviours, Blood of the Sun, True Widow and The Roller Tonight at Rubber Gloves (And/Or Tomorrow Night at The Doubewide)

Quite an interesting bill of metal-ish bands tonight up in Denton at Rubber Gloves.

Headlining this evening's festivities is Oakland's Saviours, a band that plies its craft under the "stoner metal" banner, although such a descriptor might give the wrong impression. Although the tempos may be slow, the bone-crushing guitars and intricate harmonies are certainly not what most stoners I know are capable of. Saviours' most recent effort, Accelerated Living, boasts a hatful of metal gems such as "Acid Hand" and "The Rope of Carnal Knowledge."

Equally influenced by the classic mud metal of the Melvins and the west coast old-school punk of Black Flag and Poison Idea, Saviours see themselves as saving the entire metal genre from a decade of doldrums. And, while quite the gaudy claim, they just might prove successfully.

Also well worth checking out tonight? Fort Worth's Blood of the Sun. Formed in 2004, the band has released three heaving slabs of psychedelic sludge. Channeling influences as deep and diverse as Humble Pie, Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad, this Cowtown sextet is quite capable of cracking some walls.

And, adding even more fun to this packed bill will be Dallas' own True Widow and Austin's The Roller.

In short: This is by far the coolest thing to do on this Tuesday night. And maybe tomorrow night, too: The same lineup plays The Doublewide in Dallas on Wednesday.
