Staff Trax: The Fall, The Binges and Holland-Dozier-Holland

Welcome to Staff Trax, the weekly feature here on DC9 where we shed some light on the music we've been enjoying of late, regardless of the touring or album release schedules that tend to bear the focus of most of our coverage. Consider it a chance for you readers to get some more insight into our own personal tastes. Maybe you'll find something you like, ya dig?

The Fall - "Reformation"

Back in 2005, I had the, ahem, pleasure of interviewing Mark E. Smith, the unpredictable leader of legendary post-punk band The Fall. Needless to say, it was a funny and harrowing experience. Even at 53, Smith is capable of enough bile to fill a couple of swimming pools. The guy has led some form of The Fall since 1976 and he somehow keeps cranking out quality product. The Fall is about to release Your Future, Our Clutter, a tight and tough collection of punk that once again features Smith's nonsensical caterwauling. Back in 2007, The Fall released Reformation Post TLC from whence came the song "Reformation" and the accompanying claustrophobic video. --Darryl Smyers

The Binges - "Hear Me Out"

I don't have anything clever, eloquent, or well-spoken to say about this one. Except that a) it rocks holy motherfucking balls, and b) the Asian chick guitarists in it give me little goosey-pimples. An L.A. hard rock act managed by former Flipp keyboardist Kii, I think this band's just bubbling under, getting ready to 'splode. --Alan Ayo

Holland-Dozier-Holland - "Why Can't We Be Lovers?"

Full credit goes to Bobby Patterson, the legendary Dallas-area producer and musician that I report traffic for during the middays, for introducing me to this wonderful song. This is just a simple little plea to a desired lover, but it feels magical at the same time. Imagine Todd Rundgren backing the Temptations and you have a good idea of how special this is. --Eric Grubbs
