DOMA XXII: And The Nominees Are...

Well, we did it. Just minutes ago, we reached 300 followers on Twitter for our @DOMATweets account. Which means, as promised, it's time to reveal the ballots.

After the jump, feel free to peruse the ballot for your 2010 Dallas Observer Music Awards. And, in the comments, go to town on your thoughts.

But, first, here's how it came to be: This year, 70-plus members of the local music community (journalists, bloggers, booking agents, club managers, producers, DJs, publicists, etc.) took part in our nomination round, filling out a form in which they could nominate up to five acts per category. We here at DC9 then compiled those nominations, and the most-nominated bands for each category are the ones who have made it onto the ballot.

Official voting for this year's awards begins on June 10, when ballots start running in our print edition and online. Open voting will run from that start date until Saturday, July 17, the night of our DOMA Showcase, which this year, will take place on various stages around Deep Ellum. The winners will then be announce in a live, free-to-attend event taking place at the Granada Theater on Tuesday, July 20. Those names will again be announced in a cover story package set to run in the Observer issue that comes out on July 22.

For now, it's time to grovel, boast, brag and hash out the ballot in the comments below. So have at it.

Oh, and keep following that @DOMATweets account on Twitter. We'll be leaking more and more info about DOMA XXII exclusively from that account for the next few months. You'll want to keep following it, that's all I'm saying.

OK, now, onto the ballot...

I think it was better when the staff chose the nominees, as there are some serious snobberies going on around here. I could list the venues, booking agents and bands that AGAIN got left off this ballot, but that would just be ANOTHER negative comment on DC9.

For the band categories the options should be expanded to 10 bands. 5 leaves way too many good bands without even a mention. At least POST the next 5 highest bands in each category so we can see.

Solid lists. Some seem all to familiar though which is either a really good sign or a really bad sign.

And let's start the list of snubs. I'll start with what I feel is the biggest ommission:

What 70 members of the music community did you ask exactly? It seems like anyone you could have asked would have some stake personally in this ballot, if in fact they are still active in this 'community' otherwise you wouldn't have asked them for their opinion...

Shouldn't the entire nomination system be regarded as a massive conflict of interest?

I guess they just didn't get the votes, but I'm surprised to see no Centro-matic, The Boom Boom Box, Cocky Americans, Dove Hunter, Daniel Folmer, Stella Rose, New Fumes, or Caleb Ian Campbell on here. On behalf of the band I'm in that got nominated: This is a fair and unbiased system, and this list is a perfect representation of the Dallas and Denton music scene. Thank you for a brilliant ballot, Observer!
On behalf of the other projects I'm involved with that didn't get nominated: This list is obviously created by a bunch of insiders with agendas and poor taste that only nominate themselves or whomever they're screwing. This is a list populated by hacks and cronies. Boo! The Observer has failed all of Mankind.

For categories like best solo, folk, instrumentalist, male vocalist, female vocalist, etc...are we not asking Dallas' coffeehouses? Opening Bell, Crooked Tree, Mokah Coffee Bar, Roots, It's a Grind, etc, etc?

None of the best acts I've seen at these venues were on any list. Ryan Edgar? Becky Middleton? Summer Ames?

I think a HUGE scene of talented musicians is being overlooked in all of the hipster/club mania. Acts that still sound good when you're sober and alert should be on this list. Time to expand horizons with judge selection.

How in the name of Zues you can leave Smile Smile's Truth On Tape off of the list of Best Albums is beyond me. They're not even my typical cup of tea. However, you can't tune into KXT, a station that the Observer supports and mentions frequently, for 10 minutes without hearing one of several tracks they play from their record. Enough about that. Where are the Toadies? Where's Boom Boom Box? And how do records that have been out for one fucking week get nominated? Shocking.

We are glad the Dallas music scene is still going, us included and cool to see new talent coming up.

There should be a “Best Reunion Show” category. Slow Roosevelt, The Toadies, Ugly Mustard, & Brutal Juice have played kick ass reunion shows recently. Now we just need Course of Empire, The Nixons, Hagfish, Hash Palace & others to rock.

Show the young rockers how is used to be done with packed venues.

Congrats to everyone nominated! Regardless of your opinion of them, they obviously carry enough clout to get the nomination over others. There’s no perfect system, but I think this way is hell of a lot better than just leaving it up to the Observer. Atleast this way there was an opportunity to gauge what the scene as a whole thought about everyone… There’s flaws in it, sure, I mean hell, did Neon Indian even live in DFW for 15 minutes of the past year? But this is a good way to go about it. There’s plenty of people who weren’t nominated that “should” have been, but that just means it’s been a good year. I’m curious to know EVERYONE nominated… because there are folks on ballots that didn’t make the final 5 or 8 or whatever… That would be a cool list with the number of nominations… and I’d also love to see who would have been the nominees if it was truly left up to the masses… Someone should start a website and take nominations from everyone then crowd source the top 5 in each category… www.dallasmusicawards.com is available people, I’m just saying.

I just wanted to say that this whole thing feels like a popularity contest straight out of high school... like "most likely to succeed", "best dressed", "best looking", etc... I think it does more harm to the local scene than good. Why can't we simply appreciate each band/venue for the role it plays in our local scene? Art/music is subjective. So how can one be better than the other? Thank god we have the doublewide, the granada, "hipster" music and texas country. Without diversity this city would be shallow and boring...

I'm happy to see so many of my friends get much-deserved recognition. Cheers.

Mrs. Fort Worth says:

If you want to see a solid music awards ballot, then hop on over to the FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS (ballots were released on Wed.). I'm pretty sure the artists were chosen by the staff, and you don't see the comment section of the Weekly's Blog full of jerk-offs trying to rip each other apart.

The whole event is supposed to be about bringing the music community together, which is exactly what the FW Weekly strives to accomplish. Dallas could learn a few things from "Cowtown".

Cody says:

Great ideas Nico. Some "music scenes" are bigger than other music scenes in Dallas, meaning more venues and coverage, and therefore more nominations for artists of those styles. It'd be nice to at least know that other artists received nods for their achievements in bringing noteriety to the overall Dallas music scene, even if they weren't top 5 in votes. To those who were I say congratulations! Keep doing what you're doing.

One who knows says:

Mrs. Fort Worth, I will have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of the FW Weekly situation. I too live in Fort Worth and can tell you that the FW Weakly knows nothing about the local music scene in the very city which it purports to cover. Their music awards ballot is essentially the same old crap year after year. They include bands that are totally irrelevant and that nobody cares about because the "music editor" is buds with them. Seriously, Fort Worth's so called "music scene" is a joke and will continue to be until the FW Weakly decides to actually cover some shit that people care about.

And with regard to their blog comments section not containing jerk-off's trying to rip each other apart, it's because nobody gives a crap about their site, their articles or anything else that has to do with that P.O.S.

TM says:

One who knows, who did the FW Weekly miss? You sound like you know a lot of bands. I too live in Fort Worth and was scratching my head trying to drum up more than 2 other artists that did not make the cut that actually play out in Fort Worth. Keep in mind all their bands are supposed to be from Cowtown and not all of North Texas.

Posted On: Friday, May. 28 2010 @ 11:44AM
One who knows says:

TM, I really can't gripe too much about the Weakly's ballot because I don't really care too much about it. My main complaint is that the Weakly's music section is a joke. Each week, half of the so called "music" articles are about bars or restaurants or something other than music and/or bands. They would do themselves well to stick to music in the "music" section of their paper. There are also plenty of bands in Fort Worth that merit coverage, yet they always seem to find bands that do not merit coverage. Each week, the Weakly seems to find new ways to disappoint. They need to spend a few weeks reading the Observer in order to find out how to run a music section.

Liles says:

I agree with Dave Little's assertion that Mike Snider should have been nominated for Best Music Advocate. The same could also be said for Russell Hobbs. (Over 40 years of promoting shows in Deep Ellum between the two.)

If the Observer will allow it, please take my name off the ballot and replace it with either Mike Snider or Russell Hobbs. No disrespect to anyone who nominated me, but both of these guys deserve it more than I do.

Posted On: Friday, May. 28 2010 @ 1:44PM
dave Little says:

i think you deserve it, too, liles. as do the others. but to not have mike there is a shame. i know, we can go down each list and complain about who didn't get nominated. but it seems to me that this is a category that has less to do with taste and more to do with a dogged desire to have live music playing in as many venues as possible. just my opinion, but i'm fucked up in the head.

Not a Blues fan, but know better.. says:

It's nice to see Hunter Hendrickson was nominated.. He is amazing. That's one out of the five acts that actually play's blues. One. Is there nobody with a brain in charge here?

Dallas has an actual blues community with a rich history. Im not even a blues fan and I know that. There are real blues players in this town. You see there names all the time.. Because they are out working hard.

Seems to be the same for R&B... Why ask 70 people who know nothing about a scene who should be nominated? Hell, if they could not think of a blues act, they could open the Observer and find some.

Mrs. Fort Worth says:

One who knows:

The point wasn't to shine a spotlight at the perfection of the Weekly's music section (which agreed can be disappointing), but rather their propencity for POSITIVITY. Again a music award shouldn't be a teardown, but a celebration of artistry, and a way to help struggling local bands find their audience through free and much needed publicity.

The 'anonymous' posts that feature some mushmouth blasting a band in this comment section is a reflection of the NEGATIVITY the Dallas Observer feeds upon in it's music section and in this blog.

Find me a D.O. music article or blog post w/o at least one backhanded compliment and I'll find you ten FW Weekly write-ups w/o a rip.

jekyllian says:

obviously there are going to be good and bad aspects of the list. i think the number of nominees is a bit short, but is that due to lack of clubs/stages for the showcase night?

I Wouldn't Mind an Observer Award for my Bathroom says:

A phony award show to let the scene folk pat each other on the back. Please God don't let them have Martellus Bennett rap again this year. It's NEVER a good idea to have bands compete. Bands should be supporting each other, not competing over a fake award presented by some hack local celebrity.

Posted On: Friday, May. 28 2010 @ 4:34PM
Rewhined says:

Let me see if I've got this straight:
1) If you're too popular, you shouldn't be on the list.
2) If you're not popular enough, you shouldn't be on the list.
3) The local music community shouldn't be trusted to have a say in the nominations, and the decisions should have been left to Observer employees.
4) The Observer employees are stupid.
5) Having an integrated music community is a terrible idea, because either a) Dallas is doing it wrong, or b) you think you need a passport to get to Ft. Worth or Denton, and so they shouldn't be included. Personally, I agree with the latter argument. Don't bands just podcast their practices instead of touring these days?

Maybe the problem with the Dallas music scene is people standing around in bitching instead of doing anything. Haven't seen your face in a bar or show in awhile buying merch or CDs, supporting DJs, or even just actually saying something positive.

To One Who "Knows." Over the past few weeks at the Weekly, we've written about Raging Boner, Fungi Girls, Paul Slavens, JoCo, The Cush, Pelicanstate (the side project of Telegraph Canyon's Chris Johnson), The Burning Hotels, Rotundus, Satellite Dream, Sean Russell, a new performance art space called The Where House, The Migrant (a dude from Denmark who collaborated with The Theater Fire's James Talambas), Cityview (whose new record was produced by the guy who did The Appleseed Cast and The Get-Up Kids), a new supergroup called White Mountain (featuring an ex-member of Black Tie Dynasty and current member of the recently reunited Garuda), Calhoun (whose new record is being produced by the dude who did Ryan Adams' Rock N Roll album), Lola's-palooza, the Other Texas Music Festival, Loop 12, Merkin, Rivercrest Yacht Club, Titanmoon, Daniel Katsuk, Twisted Black (who recorded the vocals for his new CD over the phone from a federal detention facility in Beaumont), and ... you get my point. What Fort Worth Weekly have YOU been reading? Anyway, I wouldn't confuse having a few beers with me once every other month as being my friend. No musician has ever helped me move furniture or picked me up from the airport. None. Sorry your or your friend's band wasn't on the ballot, a ballot compiled by the votes of club owners, promoters, radio people, and other music journalists. Thanks for your time.

Oh. Going back a few weeks earlier, we also wrote about Eyes Wings and Many Other Things, Shapes Stars Make, Fort Worth Sings for Haiti, and Wasted Words Art Collective. We also broke the story about EPIC RUINS (a side project of the guy who drums in Ben Harper's band, Jordan Richardson) and did a cover story on the return of Shea Seger, whose new album includes contributions from the bass player for The Who (yes, THAT Who) and the touring organist for Roger Waters (yes, THAT Roger Waters). And, yes, the Weekly's music section is only one page (plus listings), but it's always 100-PERCENT 817-local: artists either originally from Tarrant County (our distribution area) or living here now. Face.
