• Deep Ellum is the one place in the city where it is NOT like that. All the land / business owners are very laid back down here and genuinely want the arts and local culture to thrive. The community is a blessing compared to some other parts of the city, we should all recognize that. Whatever style of music you do, whatever form of art your into should be irrelevant. • Brilliant! Cross genre-shows are very relevant right now. Were not in the "I'm a punk rocker" vs "I'm a hip hopper" era anymore. Peoples taste in music are not so clearly defined. www.deepellumcommunity.com would gladly sponsor / co-host an effort to bring the larger music scene together. Heck, Deep Ellum needs something like that! It could be instrumental in getting things back on track for the summer. How can I get in contact with you?

• well, then i'll tell you the same thing i tell everyone...let's change that. is this comp gonna do it? no. it's obviously a big issue, and frankly bigger than i thought it was, considering what you're saying. so shoot me some links to my email address and show me what's out there that i'm missing, so i can tell other people. put together a show and get in touch w/ me and let's do a hip hop meets punk rock night. or better yet, get the word out about the comp and get some bands sent my way so i can get them on this album and show people that deep ellum is about more than punk, rock, and country. any help is appreciated, and every bit helps move the scene forward. • Let me be very clear that I am NOT saying in any way form or fashion that "the Rock scene" is racist. I like rock music too! My statement - "When will the people in charge stop subjugating anything and everything into "Top 40 Dirty South Crap"?" pretty much says it all. You know first hand a lot venue owners/ land owners and policy makers here in Dallas ARE racist for all intensive purposes. Maybe not outright, but they have beliefs under the table that would be viewed by any person of color as racist. That in and of itself sets the tone, because then bands, promoters, writers and the larger music ecosystem inadvertently treats the genre like an unwanted stepchild for fear of losing visibility / opportunity form these very "powers that be". "Oh, we do all rock shows, no hip hop stuff..." You know exactly what I am saying! It is what it is. As long as the taste-makers here allow these types of people to approve what is acceptable local music, we will continue to look like chumps on the national scene. You aren't just letting them punk out local hip hop, your allowing them to punk out THE ENTIRE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE by not letting the really good stuff in that genre stand side by side with everyone else. This has been a source of contention in the urban market here for a long, long time. You see little glimpses of hope here and there, but overall... it's business as usual.

• also, for the record, it's a little racist to assume that "rockers" don't give a shit about hip hop, rap, or other members of the "urban market" as you put it. many of the punks, rockers, rockabilly kids, on down the line, all have a lot more respect for all styles of music than we're given credit for. my goatee and long hair, or my scene's love of bullet belts and mohawks is no more a symbol of my love or hatred of specific music than the sterotypes of your scene are. this is about trying to get everyone, of every genre, involved, and i was honestly hoping for it to take a little longer before we got jumped for trying to help out. come out to the show on saturday at muddy waters, let's have a beer and find something in common. i'll turn you onto some music. you turn me onto some music, and we'll call it a day.

• actually, i feel kinda shitty that hip hop didn't make it onto that list. i've been sending out letters to everyone, and rather than use a form letter each one's been personal hand written (typed) stuff, and in some of them, frankly i missed a genre here and there. i welcome hip hop, and actually have my fingers crossed about my first submission coming through for us. anyone who knows responsible johnny, and me personally since it was my fuckup, knows that i'm the furthest thing from racist. i'll talk old 20s blues, jazz, rap, or hip hop with anyone, and actually got chastised for urging people at the prophet bar to email a punk band that stickered up the blind lemon jefferson plaque outside of prophet to tell them to study their music history and then go fuck themselves for being so rude. so, to summarize...not racist, would love some rap and hip hop along with other genres, and fuck that band that stickered up the blind lemon plaque. any further questions, discussions, or comments on my potential racism, please email me and i will be more than happy to discuss.

• ...and for the record Pete, you have done a great job. The best you can with what you've got. I just wanted to say that. No one who has ever done any of these little local comps for "The Sound of The City" Vol. 12 (or whatever) pays ANY attention to the good local hip hop. Many I have talked to make general statements about their perception of local hip hop, with no actual insight or research on the topic. "Oh, we don't want all that gangster crap on our CD" - You know what I am saying?! Seems like embracing all local culture (even if it isn't your bag) would be a good policy / strategy for longevity and a means to cultivate a larger musical movement from this area. Go figure.

• No hip hop? I mean real, genuine, artistic, soulful Dallas hip hop? Chucky Sly, Damaged Good$, Sore Losers, ADd+, the Mega Royal Records Camp? Do you think most rockers locally even know or care what the difference is between rap and real hip hop? It is just retarded to completely ignore the local hip hop scene like many of the writers, promoters, club owners and property owners have over the years. Then when one of them blows up, yall do a whole expose on them... but didn't look twice or support any of them when they were in your own back yard. How you treat the urban market here is a metaphor for a lot of things wrong with this city. Short sighted and borderline racist!

• We're getting hit with bands less than 30 minutes after this article went up, and I couldn't be happier about that. One thing I wanted to clarify for people is that if you're applying for the comp we do need a Deep Ellum related song - this is 20 bands, 20 songs about Ellum.
