No. 5: VEGA -- "No Reasons"

Things moved pretty fast in 2009--so much so that what started out as a promising-looking year for Alan Palomo's VEGA project ended up being a pretty bare one. Mostly because, as the year went on, Palomo's other project, Neon Indian, took over as the Dallas-born pop guru's top priority.

But, as successful as Neon Indian was in creating a buzz in 2009, it was Palomo's VEGA outfit that featured the artist's most impressive work.

Bonus mp3: VEGA -- "No Reasons"

Irresistibly and immediately infectious, "No Reasons" was something of a litmus test for Palomo. Released as part of the Well Known Pleasures EP that came out in the early summer, it served as proof that, despite 2008 breakup of his much-beloved (both by North Texas and the blogosphere) Ghosthustler outfit, Palomo's creativity had only just begun to develop. And though other tracks leaked onto the Internet before "No Reasons," it was this song that indisputably crowned Palomo as more than a blip on the electro-dance music radar.

With the success of Ghosthustler, Neon Indian and VEGA, Palomo's now stood among the buzziest in the genre for a good three years--and with its pulsating synth line, foot-tapping beat and earworm of a refrain, "No Reasons" stands as Palomo's finest display yet. The perfect soundtrack for a day on South Beach--or just the soundtrack to a new, improved Miami Vice--the song serves as dance track palatable for the masses. Indeed, "No Reasons" may just be the finest '80s-reverential dance single we've yet heard in that era of music's return to prominence.

VEGA may have taken a backseat to Neon Indian in 2009, but because society's such a sucker for ear candy, we're betting that VEGA proves itself the longer-lasting entity.
