What's Probably A Completely Unfair Reaction To KXT's Launch Day Performance

Listen: I get that there are a lot of pressures and issues to deal with when launching a radio station. Really, I do.

But I also get the importance of making a good first impression. And, c'mon, explain this to me: How does a station--one which names itself KXT as a play on our state's abbreviation and one which will go on to play tons of local music over the course of its opening day playlist--start its entire history off by launching with Carlos Santana's "She's Not There"? Really: Explain that to me. Please.

Wilonsky and I spent a good 20 minutes this morning trying to figure that one out--and couldn't for the life of us. We'd both awakened early to catch the station's launch, and we both came up with literally hundreds of other, more suitable options for the station's open.

But maybe I'm harping too much here on the station's first track alone. I'll give you that. Fine. Because, granted, there were some pretty cool moments scattered throughout the day.

For instance, it was pretty awesome to hear Telegraph Canyon's "Shake Your Fist" as the sixth-played song on the station, and the first local product played in its history. So, too, was just a moment ago, when afternoon host Joe Kozera dropped Bosque Brown's "Train Song," as good a song as we've seen from a local in 2009--and one other area stations wouldn't dare touch.

Credit where it's due: Fumbles aside, Kozera seems to be at least having some fun with his afternoon playlist, keeping things unpredictable and lighthearted--and, most importantly, easy-going. Morning show host Gini Mascorro didn't fare as well, sounding nervous and rigid in her delivery when listing the songs she'd played earlier in her playlists in the few moments she appeared on the air this morning.

Not that I'm complaining about the lack of DJ presence on the station thus far--believe me, I'm not. But it would have been nice to hear some excitement this morning as this station--one so many are expecting so much from--as it launched.

It would've been nice to see a little foresight, too, in the song selections: The best and worst part of this, KXT's launch day, has, simultaneously, been its all-over-the-map song selections. Such a free format has its benefits, sure, but today, it just seemed the lowest common denominator indie rock version of JackFM.

And while I'm not going to argue against the merit of Queen and The Rolling Stones or even Moby and Wings, I do have a problem with their recognizable fare being played so early on in the station's history. If you like, fine: Call it a necessary dumbing down of the station's playlist so that it can bee accessible for listeners--Preston Jones of the Star-Telegram did--but it smacks, to me, of a station not respecting its audience, scared to come out guns-blazing and confidently. There's no need to placate; those acts can be heard all over the radio dial. There, is, however, a need to challenge the audiences--respectfully--by playing music the jocks are confident in being great, regardless of whether the audience is already familiar with the songs.

Ultimately, that's been the problem with KXT all day long. Have there been solid songs popping up over the course of the day? Yeah, sure. But it hasn't been wow-worthy. Not at all. And there have been too many errors--CDs skipping, sound cutting out, volume levels coming through the dial unpredictably. Kinda tough to come out the gate with any sort of swagger with these issues.

Seems every legitimate music fan in town is ready to anoint this station as the city's radio savior already. Let's hold our horses there. Is this a promising start? Potentially. But until KXT starts behaving like it knows it can be the best station in town--as opposed to a timid one really hoping that people like it--it won't be.

I think you are too worried about a song that you, Robert and maybe 15 other people heard. The merit of this station will not be made on the first song but what you hear at 8:10 and 5:30 to and from work.

Now off to catch that 5:30 song.

I'm nowhere *near* giving up on this station (been waiting a LONG time for something like this in this city), but I have to admit I groaned out loud when I tuned in for the first time, only to hear the Stones' "Waiting on a Friend". Kill me.

Give them some time - agree that there were hundreds of songs I would have rather heard at 7am than Santana but I think the station will adjust and will definitely listen to its audience.

My wish is that it becomes more like KGSR in its playlist and less KZPS.

I am still a loyal P1er to The Ticket, but if I want music radio, I will tune in first to KXT.

It seems like everyone is more shocked at what KXT played than upset that they actually played it. I don't remember KXT ever making a promise not to play recognizable music.

You might call me crazy, but I didn't hear a bad track all day. Queen's "Somebody to Love" is a welcome relief to KZPS hammering "Bohemian Rhapsody" down our throats three times a day.

Heres to a great first day KXT -- keep them coming!

Pete, you make some salient points, but overall I think you are being unfair, and here's why: Dallas is not, and will never be, Seattle/Austin/Portland/fill-in-the-blank-city-filled-with-indie-hipsters. Dallas does have a solid music scene, albeit one that's rather overlooked by the general population. And because it has remained mostly under the radar, it hasn't influenced the larger musical tastes of our fair burg, which still (sadly) run towards the mainstream and predictable. It seems that the KERA folks, having watched other stations try to be different and ultimately fail (or get watered down to pablum, like KDGE), figured they'd balance things out a bit given the whims of the market and see what happens. It makes sense; give folks a decent Stones track between Miike Snow and Regina Spektor and they may warm up to the two newer artists even if they've never heard of them. It's likely to help build cume (cumulative total audience), one of the major anchors of the Arbitron radio ratings system (and also important for public stations when it comes to pledge time). Sure, it's only the first day, but so far they seem to be maintaining that balance while still being truly unique. The KEXP model will never work here - hence the reason IndieVerse didn't even hack it on HD Radio, good as it is - but I think KXT can become a real catalyst to increase the musical knowledge and interest in North Texas if listeners (and cynical, though educated, journalists) will give it the opportunity to do so.

I think it was a fine launch. I also like the fact that kicked it off with a shitty song. I've heard three people bitch about that song. The station is great, it's a great thing to have in DFW. When it comes to music, there isn't anything "on the air" that comes close to it. I'm sure the Cooligentsia will eventually start to whine about not hearing enough "Grizzly Bear"...but honestly isn't "not enough" beardrock better than "none"? Well isn't groovy hipster? So what if you had to endure "Down by The Seaside" to get to it...

Paul S says:

There has got to be so much to consider when working out that first song, all those implications (I would have gone with something akin to Radio Clash).

I might be over thinking this as well but perhaps starting with Santana's "She's not There" was a deliberate non-statement. That sublime, awkward first words spoken to the cute girl, not too heavy or pretentious or slick just honest and a little bit goofy.

Shaner says:

Good start. Hope they get the sound bugs worked out. The stream (especially the mp3 stream) sound better than the actual FM broadcast.
And so what if they throw in a few classic rock nuggets here and there? As long as they play the songs KZPS wont touch anymore....(sure play Waitin on a Friend, not Start me up........play Fashion, not Fame)
Besides KTCU and KNON, this is the best thing going in music radio we've had in a long time.

And if radio is sooo dead, why are so many people still worked up over it?

Posted On: Tuesday, Nov. 10 2009 @ 8:48AM
dave says:

Their first track could have been a duet of Stephen Hawking and Pete Rose's sister singing the Farmer's Branch phone book...it doesn't matter.

This is the best playlist on DFW FM radio right now. And it's only day one.

Although, I also recognize that being the best FM station in Dallas is like being King of the A-holes.

Here's my one complaint tho...it's a cool song and all, but do we need to hear the same Devendra Banhart track two mornings in a row?

But again...who would have thought we'd ever be arguing over Banhart being played too much on Dallas FM radio.

Hey Pete,
Why are you being so negative. It was the first day and it appears that the playlist will be about 25% local music, which is actually higher than most other NPR affiliates with a music station. There will be a few things for them to work out, but it is great that North Texas finally has a station that can rally around local music. Quit trying so hard to be an uber cool scenester! It's okay...

tom Hendricks says:

For me it wasn't all over the map at all. The music sounded like bad 70's album rock , or stoner music. Pretty generic to me.
But all is not lost. What they need to do to fix is simple, have a lot lot lot more people programming the station - such that many of the bad selections get weeded out and we have more than two viewpoints.

Posted On: Tuesday, Nov. 10 2009 @ 12:04PM
tom Hendricks says:

Pete says,
There, is, however, a need to challenge the audiences--respectfully--by playing music the jocks are confident in being great, regardless of whether the audience is already familiar with the songs.

How can you be so two faced. You know good and well you and the Observer are blocking the new music started here in Dallas, Post-Bands music. The music challenges rock, and bad media too. You need to talk about how you are blocking new music, before criticizing anyone else for doing it. How about being less two faced in your advice?

You complain about them dumbing down, yet refuse to cover music that challenges, rock, the media, corporate control of music, etc. etc. At the same time the only music you'll cover is safe and generic and retro.

Stopn the big lies. Why should anyone believe anything you say now. Be honest with your audience Pete. Tell them that you are openly and honestly opposing the new music because it has bite that the Observer doesn't dare discuss. Then leave off giving advice that you or your weekly won't take.

It's 2009. People should understand by now that satellite radio replaced FM several years ago. Why does anyone anywhere give a fuck about FM radio in 2009? Are you churning butter and riding around in a Model T as well? Bitching about FM radio is like bitching about the antenna sticking out of your roof: It's pointless because there are so many other options. Take advantage of them, and you'll fine fewer reasons to bitch about nothing.

Grateful says:

I am glad that you conceded that your review is unfair, because it is. I get that you’re trying to provide a constructive critique of a station you will ultimately like, but still... As a longtime Dallasite, I can tell you that the pickings on FM radio have been slim for some time.

Over the four months that 93.3 dabbled with a “Quality Rock” format, I was elated that a mere fifty percent of their content was music I truly enjoyed. I went to bed last night realizing that I was pretty well satisfied with ninety percent of the tunes I heard on 91.7’s first day. Ninety percent!

I realize we all have different expectations, but I guess my point, more than anything, is that there is so much about this recent effort for which to be grateful. Why be so negative?

Sybil says:

I've read Pete's review and all these 30-odd comments, and all I see are comments about the playlist. If listening to my favorite tunes is all I'm interested in, well that's what CDs and ipods are for. Radio is an art form, if it's done right, but so far this sounds a little like a bad SNL skit.

I totally enjoyed the music on KXT, now give me another reason to keep listening, and more importantly, contributing. I listen to the radio for the human connection. I love the Hardline guys, even though I couldn't care less if the Cowboys win lose or draw. If impersonal music, one song after another is what I'm after, well I can just push play.

I know I LOVE that Ben Folds song, Joe, now tell me WHY you played it.

Look, I agree satellite radio is great. But I'm cheap. I don't wanna pay a monthly subscription fee for satellite access. I'm sure I'm not the only one. So, that's one reason why some people still listen to the radio. So eat it satellite hipsters.

Too bad there used to be a station like this in Dallas over 20 years ago called KERA 90.1. They used to play tons of great local and international music, that is until Abby Goldstein and Jeff Luchsinger turned it into the 24-hour indigo girls jewish lesbian of color talk-therapy torture station.

I really like the station. It will hopefully change the music desert that is Dallas radio. The music selection is pretty good, a little conservative, but good. I believe over time they will develop a better mix.
My only complaint is WHY DO THEY BREAK FOR NEWS? If you want news tune in to 90.1. It is a real mood killer when Gini or Joe is in the zone playing a great mix and we have to stop to hear about the latest in the healthcare debate. This is a music station "music to the core". NPR news should not be part of this. I hope they can break this tie.

I don't think Pete's comments about this station were too harsh at all. I really want to like this station too. But please KXT go heavier on songs the whole world is unfamiliar with. Give us loads more of Danny Balis and Telegraph Canyon. That's why people will tune in, just like the old days --- an original play list that shows us the way with local and new music. That should be this station's niche. We can hear the Rolling Stones and Queen all day long on Jack FM.

Kristen says:

I am happy to have an "indie" station, but for heaven's sake, please get some DJs in there that aren't so embarrassingly nerdy.

And play more local. More Lovie!

mediawonk, There must be more variety in the other shows like you said. I was listening to the morning and the afternoon shows. They didn't have that much variety, when I was listening.

Tom U. says:

I've heard countless, far-worse station launches, especially in DFW. I'm hopeful, like much of what I hear (especially since most of it I've heard *ahem* on DFW radio a few ticks left of the dial, albeit from a station with 90 thousand less wattage)...

The slogan's boring to me. If you want to have a little local-colored fun, why not use something like "Where The Best begins"

btw, I'm available for hire, kxt management. :)

Kate says:

Late to the game, I know, but I'm enjoying the new station. Sirius gave me 3 free months when I bought a Ford earlier this year. When that term is up, I think I'll just pay the subscription fee to KXT.

kURT says:

OK, then walk across the hall to radio and please pass along the following coaching suggestions. You know the station very, very well.

Start doing 15 minute maintenance of upcoming songs or shows and stop saying, "let's get Back Into the Music with..." at each break.

Start summarizing the play list and highlight one - maybe two - notable artists/songs when back announcing. Stop listing every song and artist.

Start putting some enthusiasm into the announcing. Stop dwelling on trip ups or one's lack of caffeine.

Could, "She's Not There," be a nod to the absence of Abby Goldstein. I've been listening to the new station all week and love the music... mostly... but man, what's up with these DJ's? Where the hell is Abby and how could they launch something like this without her?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 13 2009 @ 7:52AM
Get over it says:

Abby is in New Hampshire now, running a public radio outfit. She had her time in Dallas, time to move on.

DarinR says:

I gotta re-chime in here. After a week, I still love the station. I will say though, that I am hearing a lot of songs being repeated, a tremendous amount of times. There is far to large a library to pull from for this to be happening. I've heard some whiny acoustic song about "The road doesn't leave you do" or something like that, about 4 or 5 times. Really? I'm not listening all the time either, I tune in 2 or 3 times a day. "Give me the guess who. They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic"...

Honestly Gini, maybe a "little" less of the "tie died hippie vegan hacky-sack patchouli stench coffee shop hemp sandle singer songwriter stuff" and if you DO wanna keep playing it in massive amounts like that, how about changing up the songs. Aside from the repeating of that, all is well.
Please play "down by the seaside" again, I like it, and I bet those guys are gonna be huge. I do, realize the conflict in regard to the hippie shit and my request, however I didn't ask it be played every 200 minutes.

Don't ruin this station too, Abby says:

Abby Goldstein was one of the main perpetrators of the format change of KERA 90.1 back in the 90's that transformed it from a great station into a morass of folkie-lesbian-of-color-and-size-music suckitude. Good riddance.

The comments here show a lot of interest in something anything new in radio. Maybe this is it, maybe not. I tend to think it's a clone of the NPR music site stuff - which seems trendy and generic, and puffed up aplenty.
