1. The Granada Theater's early (or just plain thought out) starting times

Opening band at 9:00, headliner just after 10:00. What's not perfect about that? I get all these excuses from other club owners about alcohol sales and whatnot, but every time I exit the Granada at just past midnight, after witnessing another great show, a good supply of beer in my belly, I thank my lucky stars for having this oasis of good sense so close to my home.

2. CD Source

Sure the staff can be cranky and a bit eccentric, but hell, that's my entire family and co-workers as well. Not as trendy or as youthful or as smartly located as Good Records, CD Source is a heavenly mess of a music store. But if you've got a couple hours to kill on a Saturday afternoon, I can think of nothing better than spending it numbingly flicking through CDs looking for the perfect buy.

3. Salim Nourallah

After hosting Salim's DC9 in Space episode, I was struck by how much we take Mr. Nourallah for granted. Not only does the guy create great music, his production skills help other local acts sound better than they every have. Case in point, The Cut*Off. This motley quartet out of Cowtown already had a good sound, but Nourallah's skills have only sharpened the band's focus. Nourallah's gifted knob twisting may, in fact, be better than his compositional skills; and saying that does not detract from either of the man's talents.

4. Trees being opened again

Sure, the bookings haven't been life changing, but having this venue open once more is reason enough to be thankful. Watching Reunion Arena recently tumble to the ground brought on such a wave of nostalgia that I may spend the net couple of weekends at Trees no matter who is playing.

5. The Orphanage Radio Program on The Ticket

On Saturdays, from 10 to noon, Danny Balis and Gen-X Davy Lane talk music better than any other local radio hosts. Whether it's debating the merits of Radiohead or talking up local bands or events, Balis and Lane know their stuff. Throwing in a few sports points to keep management happy, the duo are factual and funny. If it weren't for their drinking habits, they might even warrant a longer shift.

kYle says:

Everything about The Granada is greatness. Excellent sound system, friendly staff, beer in bottles (are you listening house of blues?) Plus, a very informative website. Try finding out what time doors open at the top venue north of the dial.

@ kYle,

I don't know what shows that you are going to because I am always happy when I see that the venue is selling beer in cans or cups instead of bottles. At least that way I know that Im not going to get nailed upside the head by a flying bottle or slice up my feet/legs on a bottle that someone dropped on the floor as opposed to fighting through the crowd to find a trash can. Fuck beer snobbery. I don't want stitches.

Some guy says:

1. Sure

2. Yes

3. Salim Nourallah ruins records.

4. Zzzzzz.

5. Never up that early.

Some other guy says:

Salim Nourallah is the most brilliant, gifted musician, the most intuitive, experienced producer, and the most fair minded, giving, utterly selfless human being on God's green earth.

He would never do anything to harm anybody, oh, and he's also a wonderful, loving, caring father.

If you have any doubt, go read his blog - http://salimnourallah.blogspot.com - he'll be the first to tell you.

A third, completely unrelated guy says:

His own records
are okay
particularly the Nourallah Brothers
which is awesome
But as a producer
He cuts the balls off bands
Blame it on Gravity?
or blame it on Pleasantry Lane.

the orphanage, really? says:

Been a fan of the saturday morning show and the two hosts for quite some time. But are they really all that music related? Occasionally they dip their toes into the murky pool of music, but for the most part (especially these days) they just rehash what was said on the ticket the week prior. Not that I blame them. Maybe it's not their call. But are you just sucking up a little Darryl? When is the last time you heard them talk or critique music? Granted they are about to put on their annual charity show, but then why not include Chelsea and the rest of the Double-Wide staff for what they do?

Daniel Hopkins says:

The phrase "you can't polish a turd" comes to mind. Salim will never admit to it, but he's an expert. I've seen him turn terrible songs into masterpieces time after time.

He has a talent for bringing out the best in bands.

Rave Davies says:

1. A great venue. (But avoid the pizza)
2. A great (if only because it's one of very few remaining) record store. Yeah, I still call them record stores.
3. Whatever.
4. It won't survive, unfortunately.
5. I would rather be stabbed in the brain than listen to the Ticket, especially when those tiitties-and-beer jagoffs talk about music. As for Danny, please, it's better when you just play.

darryl says:

me suck up? who needs to suck up to danny and davey? now, we may all suck, but I really love their show, especially when one or both of them are hung over. it's radio for slackers. and they do talk and play a bunch of music, usually davey while danny says it all sucks. either way, it's a good waste of a couple of hours while i'm cleaning my kitchen!

What's up with that big sign above the stage at Granada that reads "LOVE YOURSELF"?

Shouldn't it say "Love EACH OTHER" instead?

Telling people in Dallas to love themselves even more than they already do is freakin' twisted.
