The ACL festival may be going on right now down in Austin town, but North Texas music lovers aren't going to let some silly little no-compete clause ruin the weekend.

First, let's review the shows we've already mentioned. Tonight, Telegraph Canyon releases The Tide and the Current at Lola's in Fort Worth, Wye Oak rocks The Cavern, and The Dodos bring their good vibes to House of Blues

Saturday brings Strung Out to The Granada and VIDEO, Intelligence, PVC Street Gang and the Fungi Girls' LP release (except now without the actual band) to the Handsome Kitten.

And on Sunday, Thievery Corporation raises awareness of AIDS in Africa by playing at House of Blues.

Also, the State Fair has a crazy variety of musical entertainment this weekend, from dancing dogs to the Celt-rock of The Killdares to Max Stalling to En Vogue. See this page for stage information and show times.

What else is going on? Glad you asked...

Theater Fire, Mimicking Birds, RTB2
Friday, October 2, at City Tavern

Fort Worth's Theater Fire and Denton's RTB2 should be familiar to Observer readers by now. I don't have any news or anything new to say about either act, except to mention that Theater Fire's performance a couple weeks ago at Bolsa's anniversary party was fantastic--especially when James Talambas got up to run around the Good Space and execute a headfirst diving slide, clacking his drumsticks against the ground the whole time. Portland's Mimicking Birds offers a much quieter, mellower version of folk featuring intricate acoustic fingerpicking accented with occasional samples.

Mara Lee Miller
Friday, October 2, at Smoke

Speaking of Bolsa, the Bosque Brown singer will perform at the Oak Cliff wine cafe's sister restaurant, the upscale barbecue joint in the former Cliff Cafe space. The ribs are outstanding, by the way.

Beauxregard, Land Mammals, Jesse Gage
Friday, October 2, at The Hydrant Cafe in Denton

I really enjoyed Beauxregard's 2008 EP, When Balloons Were Sleeves, so I'm glad to hear that the guys are finishing up a followup LP. According to a press release from the band, it should be a bit different: "Imagine a gunfight in the Wild West of Tombstone, AZ except it's in the year 2509 and they're using lazers. We like to call it Future Western. Quiet, desolate moments surrounded by orchestral cacophony." Hopefully they'll play some of the new songs tonight.

DJ Sega, Killanova, Prince William, Yeahdef, more
Friday, October 2, at The Lounge On Elm Street

Mad Decent's DJ Sega makes his first ever Dallas appearance, with support from about half the DJs in town including DOMA winner Yeahdef. Wonder if Sega will play "The Giggidy Song." Killanova refers to a Genova/Killtron collaboration and mixtape. The show is $5 with an RSVP to Dirt City.

Sydney Confirm, Sore Losers, Yeahdef, Keith P
Saturday, October 3, at The Lounge On Elm Street

Two dance/hip-hop parties in a row for The Lounge on Elm Street. Sore Losers, the poor man's Damaged Good$, are the ones whose fans flooded the DOMA XXI nominee announcement with spam comments. The video for "Funky Flow" is a good showcase of the group's aesthetic, sense of humor and left-field take on hip-hop.

Blue Jungle, True Widow, Eyes, Wings And Many Other Things
Saturday, October 3, at The Amsterdam Bar

Blue Jungle, from L.A., play dark, dreamy pop that's part '60s psychedelic rock and part tongue-in-cheek goth-punk, in hot pants and high heels. Their MySpace page includes a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" that is somehow both poppier and more monotonous than the original. Two great local acts round out the bill.
