Erykah Badu andThe Cannabinoids rehearse in front of television cameras. Footage from last night's rehearsal and tonight's performance are expected to be used for a TV show down the line.

A funny scene from last night's Universal Rehearsal Studios-housed run-through for tonight's Red Bull Soundclash event at Victory Plaza featuring Erykah Badu, The Cannanoids and Shiny Toy Guns: Shiny Toy Guns vocalist Sisely Treasure had just helped Badu run through the lyrics and vocal intonations of STG's "Ghost Town," which Badu and the Cannabinoids were preparing for tonight's show and had retreated to a chair off stage when Badu, quite suddenly, whipped her head around to address Treasure again.

"We've got a lot in common vocally!" Badu smiled. "You must be from Texas, huh?"

Treasure shook her head: "Uh, no."

Badu: "Well, you've been here a while, huh?"

Just a week, actually, since Shiny Toy Guns flew into town to prepare for the Red Bull event. "Actually, I'm from L.A."

Badu frowned. "L.A.?"

"Well," Treasure offered, "half our band is from Oklahoma..."

Well, yeah. Hence the reason behind tongiht's event being billed as part of Texas/OU weekend. Shiny Toy Guns is from Oklahoma (kinda). Badu and The Cannabinoids are from Texas. Just lke the football teams playing at the Cotton Bowl tomorrow.

Had Badu not gotten the memo?

If she hadn't, well, no matter. Because, oddly enough, the fact that this performance was scheduled to take place during Texas/OU weekend, and the fact that each act in it happens to hail from those states? Just a happy coincidence, the event's promoters offered during last night's rehearsal. And, much as they're using the excuse of the football game as a means to furhter promote the event, the Soundclash actually has nothing to do with football.

Rather, just like the handful of events like this one that the energy drink company has put on stateside already, it's kind of like, well, CMT's Crossroads, but with more of a competitive edge, with each act performing their takes on the the other's songs, and coming together at the end to perform a few songs together. On hand for Erykah Badu and The Cannabinoids: Shiny Toy Guns' "Le Disko" and "Ghost Town." And for Shiny Toy Guns: Badu's "Tyrone" and "On and On."

Just don't expect the versions to be true to their originals--particularly "Tyrone," says Shiny Toy Guns bassist/keyboardist Jeremy Dawson.

"We Shiny Toy Guns-ied it," he says with a laugh. "Now it sounds like the soundtrack to Lord of The Rings, when all the beasts are coming. We took everything about it to the Shiny Toy Guns level."

Though currentlly flying to a few gig a week and spending its down time in the studio preparing two upcoming digital EP releases as well as a remix album, Dawson says his band really enjoyed the idea of the concept for tonight's event.

"It's a challenge," he says. "We're working with a band that's completely left of us, and we're learning to make it work on the fly. There should be more stuff like this out there. This isn't just a show. This is a performance."

And, more than that, Dawson says, the process of preparing for tonight's even has been a learning experience: "it's very possible that some of the work we did for this could be a patch or a sound in a future song [of ours]. It's all the same gas tank, y'know?"

Drummer Mikey Martin agrees: "It just seems like a step in the right direction."

From the dropped jaws and smiles on the faces of the Cannabinoids as Shiny Toy Guns started its rehearsal, it was pretty clear that they agreed on as much, too.
