Last Night: Paul McCartney at Cowboys Stadium

Paul McCartney
Cowboys Stadium
August 19, 2009

Better than:
a competitive round of Rock Band: Beatles, to say the least.

Download: For more pictures from last night's show, check Patrick Michels' slideshow from the night.

For the first hour or so of Paul McCartney's set at Cowboys Stadium last night, the show had a little trouble gaining traction.

Blame the set's start; though McCartney opened with the Beatles hit "Drive My Car," then immediately followed things up with one of Wings' best tracks, "Jet," the show seemed to stall in its efforts to really take off--even McCartney's performance of "Blackbird" seemed a little dry.

The fact that, now, with some of the glitz rubbed off of the new stadium, the sound issues in the cavernous space seemed even more noticeable than ever, certainly didn't help, either. It was a shame: Affable as he was on stage, McCartney's performance seemed destined to disappoint. Was this a rock show, or just a live tribute to the man that was?

Then, 16 songs into the night, McCartney addressed the crowd for a moment, just as he had been doing all night long.

"When we were kids back in Liverpool. one of the biggest influences on us was a man from Texas," he said, before calling out Lubbock, and then Buddy Holly, by name, much to the audience's delight. "Here's a song we don't do for everyone. It's special. So we're gonna do it for you."

McCartney and his band then launched into a cover of Holly's "It's So Easy," a performance the crowd lapped up with joy.

From that point on, he never looked back.

Suddenly, the Beatles catalog was ripe for McCartney and his four backing players' picking: "Eleanor Rigby"; "Back In The USSR"; "Paperback Writer"; "A Day In The Life" (which transitioned into "Give Peace A Chance"); "Let It Be"; "Hey Jude"; "Day Tripper"; "I Saw Her Standing There"; nary a hit the crowd could've waned to hear was passed over.

But that didn't mean there weren't surprises. Just as McCartney had lulled the crowd into a daydreamy, whimsical state with "Let It Be," he launched into what would prove his most surprising--and most thrilling--performance of the evening.

Seemingly out of nowhere during "Live and Let Die," massive plumes of fire rose from the stage and a fireworks display worthy of a Fourth of July celebration (remember, this was inside--and the roof of this stadium was closed) shot off during the song's heavy instrumental breakdowns, much to the crowd's delight. And, McCartney, proving his consummate showmanship, played it off like he, too, was surprised by it all, pretending to clutch his heart in shock at the song's conclusion.

It was a funny moment--if only because, at 67, McCartney is still quite exuberant on stage, and his voice (perhaps the only clear thing in an otherwise muddled mix) still sounds, for the most part, the same as it ever did.

And, for the final hour and 35 minutes of the show, McCartney, never truly showing his age, indeed put on a rock show--and a remarkable one, at that.

Critic's Notebook
Personal Bias:
Uh, he's a Beatle. Everyone likes the Beatles.

Random Note: During the "Na na na na" portion of main set-closer "Hey Jude," McCartney asked various sections to sing the parts for him. They did, although, when McCartney called out on the top section to sing it for him, it seemed that they were refusing. McCartney, on stage, looked confused. Then, maybe two seconds later, the sound of their voices finally reached him on stage. That's how big this stadium is, folks.

By The Way: There were a lot of warnings before the show that, because the Rangers were playing baseball next door at essentially the same time, traffic would be a nightmare in Arlington. It wasn't; in fact, the only time my car got into a jam, it was within the Cowboys Stadium parking lot, which was backed up, because--get this--there were drug- and bomb-sniffing dogs checking out the cars as they pulled in. Unsurprisingly, upon entrance, this show proved to be the biggest whitebread draw I think I've ever seen. Oh, police...

I thought parking was a nightmare. Sound was terrible. I guess I'm not old enough to have the patience to remain seated for 3 hours during a supposed "rock show".

Live and Let Die was almost worth the price of admission.

Too bad the big screens weren't working, would have made an amazing show even better.

I've got to disagree on the point regarding the setlist. It's practically the same setlist he's used all tour! If it was slow-starting last night, it was slow-starting all summer.

But I don't know where all the complaints about the traffic are coming from. I was out of the parking lot and onto the highway in 5 minutes. It was a little worse before the show, but I've sat on I-35 during rush hour longer than that.

WE PAID $430.00 FOR OUR 2 TICKETS, DROVE OVER 4OO MILES, FOR SUCH A DISSAPPOINTMENT.
THE SOUND WAS SO BASSY, IT WAS SOOOO DISTORTED.

I LEFT AT THE 3RD SONG, BECAUSE THE SOUND SYSTEM OR THE SOUND MEN WERE SO BAD. I HAVE BEEN IN MUSIC FOR 45 YEARS, BECAUSE I WAS ALWAYS WORKING MYSELF. SO I RETIRED AND CAME BACK TO TEXAS. I ALMOST WENT TO BOSTON TO SEE PAUL, AS HE WAS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE. BUT INSTEAD WE FOUND TICKETS FOR HIS SHOW IN DALLAS. IT IS SO SAD TO SEE SOME ONE LIKE PAUL, HAVE TO PUT UP WITH SUCH A DISGRACEFUL SOUND SYSTEM IN A PLACE LIKE COWBOY STADIUM IN DALLAS.

For $760.00, I would've been a little more patient than just 3 songs. Wow. I AM SORRY FOR YOU AND FOR PAUL MCCARTNEY ALL CAPSSS.

The show did have a slow start but after Blackbird it was pure heaven!! I had the best time. The sound was fine. I can't believe how much energy Paul has! I hope to get the chance to see him again. Parking was not too bad. The hard part is all the construction going on around the stadium.

Sounds like Jerry's world isn't music friendly. I saw McCartney at the BOK in Tulsa Monday night. Smaller venue, some sound issues but overall the consensus was that the concert and McCartney were awesome.

I got to the stadium a few hours early so the parking/ traffic wasn't bad at all. getting out after the show was even easier though... but really who cares about all of the minor irrelevant details like parking. all i know is i got to see Paul McCartney, a Beatle, a music legend, live in concert! His charisma and energy was mind blowing, playing for two and a half hours. i hope i get to see him again someday... and sure the sound could have been better, but after all its a sports arena, not a theatre. i personally love live music and the way it echos and instead of singing in your car alone, your singing with 60,000+ people. singing one of his many classics like "Hey Jude" with that many people is chilling ..if you want a flawless sound, try and listen to a C.D.

Parking and Traffic were not an issue even though a shuttle would be nice. The sound got better as the show went on. Good sound at a place that big is a hard task to fill. The set did start off slow but it was worth the money overall for sure. The big screens did work, they used them on Sgt. Peppers, I liked the fact that they didn't use the giant screens and just the ones next to the stage. I was just dissapionted about the stadium itself. I think the inside is bland and generic.

McCartney ruled. Stadium acoustics SUCKED.

Hope Paul goes back to American Airlines Center again next time. Sound was much better when he played there in 2005. Doubt I will attend another concert at the Super Cave unless I hear of a major overhaul of acoustics. Pulling the curtains at the top won't cut it. Maybe some egg crates behind them would help. Didn't they learn anything after the George Strait-ait-ait echofest? Thought this was state of the art but instead was lousy sound & somebody also forgot to turn on the much-touted screen.

But McCartney ruled. He is phenomenal.

My gosh people! Be freakin grateful you got to go. He's a BEATLE, a musical genius. Me and hubby wanted to go so bad, it brought tears to our eyes just reading the set list.

Drug-sniffing dogs?! Presumably they didn't sniff McCartney's tour bus.

AMAZING show! Worth the price of tickets just to see the man. The opening band was great. The fireworks from "Live and Let Die" were no suprise, if you have watched any youtube clips from past concerts. To be 67 and play a full 2 hour set...impressive. The sound was bad in the new stadium but it was nothing to do with Sir Paul. Hope it doesnt take another 4 years for him to...get back.

Music lover says:

I thought the concert was great. From my seat, the sound was OK. Not great, but fine for such a large, domed venue. My issue is
the brand new, Billion dollar stadium itself. Parking for 80K plus was clearly an afterthought. Then after being strongly encouraged to arrive early because of the anticipated parking issues, we all got to stand in the 100F heat until about 645pm before being allowed into the stadium.
That was also after walking to the opposite side of the stadium, because you can only enter at the entrance that is specified on your ticket. Had this been a 20 year old stadium, I could understand this. But not at a brand new Billion dollar stadium.
PS, the super duper, HD, 40 million dollar
Jumbo Tron video screen that I was sitting right in front of was turned off for all but the last song of the concert.????

matt says:

monta, you are sincerely a jackass. you paid $760 for a show and left after the 3rd song? you should have at least given your awesome seats to someone who might have appreciated them. I was sitting in the upper deck and i could have "suffered" through sitting a few feet away from Sir Paul despite the loud bass.

You should stop going to concerts or just stick to Kenny G shows, you'll save a lot of money and open up seats for people who might not be so snobby to actually enjoy themselves.
