DOMA XXI: And The Nominees Are...

heisman-trophy.jpg
This year's trophy will look nothing like the Heisman. Sorry to get your hopes up.
A few weeks back, the 2009 Dallas Observer Music Awards balloting process began--somewhat quietly, I admit.

Distinguished area musicians, producers, booking agents, sound engineers, bloggers, journalists and others from around the region received an email asking them to nominate the artists they most respected and enjoyed from the past year. Once they were done, more than 80 nomination ballots were submitted to us for tabulation.

Also, this year, there was an added twist to the nomination process: As opposed to previous years where nominators solely nominated their single favorite artist per category, nominators were now allowed to suggest up to five artists for each award. The result? A ballot that I, for one, think represents the scene quite well--and, more importantly perhaps, quite comprehensibly.

Over the coming weeks, as we lead into our awards season, we here at DC9 will give you a run-down of each categories' nominees. The idea is that, hopefully, by the time our showcase rolls around on Saturday, July 18, you'll be familiar with every artist on the bill. And, when our awards show takes place on Tuesday, July 21, at the Granada Theater, you'll be there, ready to root on your favorites.

Not that you necessarily have to wait that long to start campaigning/pulling for your own.

In tomorrow's print edition, the reader ballot will make its debut, ripe and ready for you to vote away on the oldest local music awards show in the region. (This year, we turn 21. Party!)

But, 'cause we love ya, after the jump, a sneak peak at this year's nominees. All of 'em.

So, without further adieu, please, let the backlash begin.
