Video: Kelly Clarkson's "I Do Not Hook Up"

The new video for the second single ( "I Do Not Hook Up") off Kelly Clarkson's latest disc, All I Ever Wanted, premiered on MTV this morning. Thanks to the power of the Internet, that's it in the above clip.

Clarkson already told Rolling Stone that she thinks the video, which liberally apes from Wedding Crashers and Coyote Ugly, is "comedy at its finest". Is it? Hmmm... Let's just say that there's no need for Hollywood to replace Judd Apatow and crew with Burleson's Own just yet. Or ever.

I think in a world where the entire generation gets gold stars for anything they do, it's time for a wake up call. Clarkson does not stand out, she fits in. Her over produced records sound generic to me, not innovative. And most of what is a hit these days is a manufactured hit not a great song. For a song to be really great - in a world without unicorns - it has to be a big hit, a great song covered by others, and cover more than one genre. There have been few in the last decades that fit that tough definition. Find some if you can. I like bad music sometimes too. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone has a favorite that isn't really that great - but I also know it isn't great music. There's a difference. Whether you like or dislike Clarkson, I think you have to admit that she is pretty average when it comes to an honest review.
Tom, i'm new here, but it seems to me that you have no clue about music!! You say that "I Do Not Hook Up" isn't a hit?? Well, you are clearly wrong. Firstly, Katy Perry (I Kissed a Girl, Hot'n'Cold) wrote the song for Clarkson. The lyrics are pure genius! They are EXACTLY what young people today actually want to hear. Secondly, it's KELLY CLARKSON!! Anything she touches is an immediate success!! (Give or Take the singles from "My December", apart from Never Again ofcourse!) Lastly, "My Life Would Suck Without You" was an immediate hit, and will remain one of the best songs of Clarksons career, and this leaded to the immeidtate success of her latest album... So does it really suprise you that this song is ALREADY burning up the charts? It is ahead of "If U Seek Amy" by Britney Spears, which, in my opinion, will be another instant hit. So please, before writing reviews, take into consideration what the young people today want to hear... I'm talking 13-30 here... You just seem like your an arrogant 50 year old man, who just doesn't GET music.
Pete, you're picking and choosing which of the three parts of the hit definition you want. Minor bands covering minor hits doesn't do it. They have to ALSO have a major hit with it and it also has to cover more than one genre. You're avoiding the complete definition. I understand why because it shows how bankrupt and bland most contemporary trendy mainstream music is. Myspace and youtube may not be cool enough for you, but no other source has as much music from the entire world. These may not be the trendies that the Observer likes, but the list shows they are the best music. I'll put the list against any 100 you or anyone can find. It's the first World Top Forty, find a better one and let me know. My advice is stop trumpeting trendy twenties and start covering good music. You need to search more.

EXCELLENT video; thank goodness. I was hoping it would be top notch. More importantly, the album from where "I Do Not Hook Up" came from, is AMAZING!!! Bravo Kelly.
Maybe the Willie Nelson covers album from Phosphorescent, or the upcoming Steve Earle (Townes Van Zandt) or Jeffrey Focault (John Prine) cover albums will qualify...or not.
There are covers of other band's hits literally ALL the time, Tom... Lykke Li has covered Kings of Leon's "Knocked Up". Hot Chip covered Vampire Weekend's "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". About a bajillion mall punk bands have covered Kelly CLarkson's "Since U Been Gone," Rihanna's "Umbrella" (Mandy Moore did, too) and, most recently, Kanye's "Love Lockdown". The Kooks and Katy perry have both covered MGMT. I could list all day, really... and in today's day and age, remixing works on that front, too. But I bet you haven't even heard of half of these bands. Here's the deal: I think your definition of a hit is still quite prevalent today, but that you just don't know about what's happening out there because you're so focused on your supposed "Myspace and Youtube revolution" (which, actually, are outdated means of social networking and video at this point, IJS). There are plenty of other covers escaping my mind. As I think of more, maybe I'll add some here. In the meantime, if anyone else thinks of modern covers, help me out. So stop complaining and start searching, Tom. You'll find what you're looking for. But, as we're not a covers-based blog, you won't find it here, sorry.
My list - the First World Top Forty list (actually closer to about 100+) is a list of great songs not manufactured corporate 'hits'. BTW I have serious doubts that any music industry sales figures are very accurate. I think they are inflated. Be nice if the media looked into this. When I talk about a great song being a hit it has to do these 3 things: 1. Be a major hit for the musician. 2. Be so good other musicians cover the song. 3. Cover more than one genre - have some scope and breadth. I think you'll agree Clarkson has some manufactured hits that fit criteria one but nothing that anyone else will cover or anything innovative enough to please more than a narrow lite pop audience. I have heard nothing that she does that compares to any of the 100 songs on my list. Matter of fact, I would be hard pressed to name a hit since about 1980 from anyone that would fit my tough criteria. Long live the revolutions in art and media - where there finally is real honest reviews.
Tom - Clarkson sings a bunch of hit songs. Shouldnt you like her as a result? Arent you always babbling about the lack of hit songs? This isnt my cup o' tea, but a hit it will most likely become, so add it to your youtube top 173 or whatever...
How about the Observer giving a tough review to this music - for me its bland generic sound alike pop that's way overproduced. How about trading in the snarkiness for some tough music reviews?
I went to the RS article you linked, and she said: "to see me crawling across a table, it�s pretty much comedy at its finest" She's mocking out her own sexiness, not saying the video is a genius comedy flick. after watching the video, it is pretty funny.
I also like her quotes in the latest Rolling Stone where she talks about what a piece of shit 'From Justin to Kelly' was and how she only did it out of contractual obligation. Pretty funny stuff. =w=
You made Kelly sound arrogant and cheesy. The reason Kelly said the video was "comedy at its finest" was because she considers herself to be the opposite of sexy.
