Poster Of The Week: 100 Damned Guns, The Atoms, Eastwood At City Tavern
![]() |
Three bombs, three bands. Three country-rock and roots bands playing at the one of downtown's coolest venues Saturday night, to be more precise.
I was hesitant to pick this one, but really haven't come across anything that was more eye-catching. Why the hesitance? It was designed by Lance "Bonafide Darling" Lester, who is a regular DC9 contributor. But to be fair, he wasn't the only one who sent it my way. Congratulations, Lance.
Artists, promoters, venues, bands and fans: keep sending poster recommendations my way.

wasn't gonna post this but you guys make it too easy. to complain about something as trivial as poster of the week on dc-9's blog must seem petty but the fact is that whoever gets chosen for poster of the week gets some free press and promotion for their show. you would think the writer of this column might make a little more effort when choosing something that possibly hundreds (thousands?)of people will see. so, jesse, the best choice this week was really the above poster, which one of the dc-9 contributors designed? this column regularly sucks but this is the laziest post i've seen on this blog in a long time. there's nothing artistic about this poster. obviously you didn't see this piece of art promoting a show the observer most definitely will not be covering:
explain to me how lance's poster is better than that one.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 9:31AMComplaining about the poster doesn't seem petty to me. What's petty is bringing a poster to my attention after I've already chosen one. Here's a novel idea: send your suggestions BEFORE I make the choice.
In this case, though, I had seen the poster. Sorry, it just doesn't do much for me.
As for "definitely will not be covering," that's not the case either:
That's from the calendar on the home page. Not everybody knows to check that, but we have show recommendations there too.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 10:18AMhaha that poster suggested by anonymous sucks my balls
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 10:35AMcomments on blog posts about posters?
can we call say, "slow business day"?
jesse's the one inviting comments on posters by highlighting his favorite one every week so why shouldn't we comment? but yeah slow work day, it's fucking friday! so what better is there to do but to scrutinize a poster designed by dallas' biggest pearl jam fan.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 11:05AMI think instead of waterboarding detainees the gov't should make them stare that poster that a member of Eat Avery's Bones kid drew. At least you stayed in the lines!
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 11:10AMI might be able to give him a run for his money on Dallas' biggest Pearl Jam's fan. But I'll settle for 2nd place. Love that band.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 11:19AMChris, Pete's taking a few days off. He'll be back Wednesday.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 11:44AMI saw The Atoms at Club Dada a couple weeks back and was blown away by their set. Who are these guys and where have they been hiding? I'm looking forward to seeing them tomorrow at City Tavern. They are a must see and hope they lead the charge on revitalizing the Dallas music scene.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 11:51AMHey Jesse,
Isn't that "back in a few days" line about Pete, the same thing they said about Sam and Jonanna? ;)
I agree , The Atoms are great. I first saw them when they did a residency at Dada back in 06'....but then I didn't hear much about em' after that. And BTW...whatever happened to Alamo Jet?
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 1:13PMWhy not just have the top of that other poster say "We shot JR presents" -"A really Shitty Poster". Good God...to complain about the poster chosen, which is ok, and looks alot like the last 2 or 3 chosen (hint to those wanting to get poster of the week) that's fine but then to offer up a truly terrible poster is just ridiculous. Wy not just start answering food blogs with, "whatever man, sure that place is nice, but I mean, have you ever eaten at Waffle House"? No offense to Waffle House. MUCH offense to the poster maker..
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 1:45PMJust an FYI, we (The Atoms) broke up for a bit after 06 and just reunited. Thanks for the props and hope to see you all out on Saturday!
Rob
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 2:01PMthat was funny. fuckin stupid weshotjr babies
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 2:16PMthe wes hot jr poster sucks. and i am an avid reader of their site but everything matt does from eat avery's bones looks like it was done for by a special education elementary art student.
they just complained so they could promote their show in a backhanded manner.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 4:06PMMatt from EAB is a great dude and I like some of his designs. My wife has an EAB tote bag that looks really cool. I'm pretty sure he's above posting anonymous comments to promote his own show. Same goes for Meg, Robby and Jason.
Posted On: Friday, May. 1 2009 @ 4:12PMThe poster's a bit cliche, and the artist didn't even bother to typeset correctly. I really don't think it should've won, but don't know what was in the running... can we see what posters you had to choose from?
Posted On: Sunday, May. 24 2009 @ 6:10PMKristen-
I don't remember what other posters I was considering and don't keep them (except for hard copies, of course) from week to week.
Also, I don't think I understand what you mean about the typesetting.
And I don't mean for this to be a contest; I used the word "winner" when I started this feature, but have tried to stop doing so. It's just me trying to point out a cool poster each week. The artists are all winners in my book!
Well, the only time typesetting isn't that important is when the artist hand-draws the type. No hard feelings intended, it's everyone else's posts that made it seem like a contest, plus that's what I've heard from others... and it is a contest really because from what you've posted, you view many other posters and pick one that you feel is most appealing to you, and that's fine. I'm just saying that if you're going to judge a work of art, then all elements should be accounted for... such as typesetting, a MAJOR element of poster art. Look at all the previous posters, they are all typeset... Any artist or someone working for a publication can look at the poster and tell it has not been typeset... the O's, the D in Dammed, the G in Guns. It looks messy and not in a cool music poster way, it's lazy... as well as the art work. Sorry. You have your opinion and so do we, who bothered to post a comment:)That's what's great about what you've got going on with this non-contest. Keep it coming! It would be a nice gesture to all other artists if those simple elements are consistently being taken into consideration. Thanks!
