Bonus MP3: Automorrow -- "Overboard"

Since Automorrow had the CD release party for its The Diver EP on Friday, and also since my review of said EP runs in this week's print edition of the Observer, we at DC-9 thought you might like a little taste of the band.

While the band incorporates ska and reggae into its sound, "Overboard" is pure, unadulterated, hardcore punk, done the old school way ala The Ramones, The Misfits and Fear.

Seriously, this is the best punk rock song I've heard from a Dallas-area band since the '80s heyday when The Hugh Beaumont Experience, Stickmen with Rayguns and Bomb Squad walked our fair streets.

Well well. I think we're all forgetting the point here. It doesn't really matter what fancy label you put on it, or who or what you compare it to, I always thought music is about what you get out of it. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean everybody else should also. I'm glad that Tom Hendricks likes his top 100 list but if trashing everything that isn't on it is what brings his life meaning, that seems like a counter-productive existence to me. Automorrow enjoys what they do and that's all that matters. Keep rockin, brothers.

Daryl asks what music I DO like. Here is the best in the world from Myspace and Youtube - includes all genres, not just trendy alt, and all countries. AFAIK it is the first all world list of new music. Note many from Dallas made the list. We have a lot of talent here. Mostly it's stuff the trendy Observer is clueless about. And there is a lot that is innovative today as you can see in my list. But it is not coming from the Big four the four companies that control 80 % of the music industry. And its not coming from the trendies that want to fit in with sound alike music.
This is REALLY irritating considering that OVERBOARD is the ONLY Automorrow song that sounds like this!!!! The song is made less generic b/c it's surrounded by songs that sound entirely dif from it! So it's an interesting change of pace when listening to the album! I really think it would do you haters well to check out the rest of the EP before making rude comments! Now I'm starting to wish that one of the other tracks had been posted on here :/ but Oooo well this is still a great song! :D LOVE YOU GUYS <3
Who does Tom H. think he is, Greil Marcus? He wishes! What a long couple of diatribes that make absolutely no sense. Mainstream established? Automorrow? Look, Minor Threat and Black Flag and Bad Brains and hundreds of other punk bands were dismissed in the day because they weren't great musicians. But they had intensity. That's what I liked about the Automorrow track. Hell, not a lot these days is original. The Stones copped all their riffs from Chuck Berry, etc. It's a tired argument. I mean, I love King Crimson, but I also don't mind listening to Gram Parsons. I supposed since Parsons is ripping off Hank Williams, he is somoehow derivative. Pray tell, Tom, what miraculous music are you wanting us to hear? Tom must be the kind of guy who would rather read James Joyce than Gabriel Marquez. Lighten up, will you? Automorrow don't want to change the world. The song had some spunk so I thought folks might like to hear what the band is up to. I didn't expect (or want) some dissertation on Foucault.

You, the musicians on this recording, sound great if you are trying to fit in. You've got the same sound, same electric guitars, same drums, same bass as everyone else. You're doing the mainstream established music well - technically very good, and the song is ok, and everyone plays their parts to perfection.. There is nothing wrong with anything here. You've conformed to clone generic music with much skill. But if you think that doing the same as fifty billion other bands over the last 60 years is original, you have an awakening coming. I Long live the revolution in the arts. And of course it makes a difference. If you, poster, are in the industry you're out of touch. Time for you to wake up. How bad do the Big Four have to get before you change. You've never been able to tell talent from trendy. Now we find you're terrible businessmen too. Your wake up has come and gone.
I'm glad Tom doesn't listen to just bands. I listen to almost nothing but bands, mostly because I work in the industry. It does get old, and a lot of bands have a sound that gets old before they even finish playing a live set. While Automorrow may not have achieved the prerequisite genius that we need to break into Tom's favorite hipster hit list, I would just like to encourage Tom to listen to our entire EP, before he dissects and diatribes our band on "http://www.music-poop-shoot.com" Come on Tom, is drinking all that hatorade on people who are doing what they love really gonna change the paradigm of the local scene, or inspire innovation in anyone? Thanks again to Darryl for taking the time and initiative to help us reach a wider audience with our music, we appreciate it very much.
First of all I'm Not listening to just bands. Nothing is more conformist than 3 guitars and drums.Why do you listen to bands anymore? What I am listening to is the top 100 of myspace and youtube for the world. Hardly any bands on it, and the ones that are there are doing innovative work in spite of the band format. Yeah - local bands that all sound alike. Rock has become everything it started out opposing. Time for innovative musicians to oppose the sameness and to oppose the media that trumpets 60 year old stale, clone music as something innovative or new.
Well Tom, I guess you should check out the other tracks before making a call like that ;).Its mentioned in the writeup as Darryl's personal favorite, although he mentions it is the least inventive track on the disc.
@ Tom: You're entitled to you opinion, but, the last time I checked the majority of the Observer's music coverage is for local bands.
They've got that nice generic - heard it in one million bands - sound that the Observer loves.
