Because There's Nothing Like White Boys Singing About Jesus...

This Sunday, Superpages.com Center will host something called the Music Builds Tour, which aims to benefit local affiliates of Habitat for Humanity.

Now, that’s a worthy cause and all, helping low income folks build their own homes, but one has to ask if it is worth suffering through acts as bland as Third Day, Switchfoot and Jars of Clay.

Look, I know each of these religiously affiliated bands have earned a ton of Grammy and Dove awards and each has built up a significant fan base, but where’s the beef amongst all the hallelujahs? Why does spiritual music always have to be presented in the blandest way possible?

About the only, ahem, salvation of this hoo-ha is Robert Randolph & The Family Band (pictured above). Besides being named by Rolling Stone as one of the Top 100 guitar players of all time, Randolph actually adds some southern gospel grit to his songs of inspiration. The better-known white boys on this bill could certainly learn a thing or two from him.

Oh well. Still a good cause, I guess. --Darryl Smyers
